I remember hearing a long time ago that Camp Bullis could never be moved and developed due to the extraordinary amount of unexploded ordinances all over the property. Again, just "heard" that a long time ago.

With only a single access point, I find it hard to see the site as a La Cantera style shopping destination.
The city was in negotiations with the quarry owners a while back, that had delayed the formal opening of the trail segment even after the trail was finished.
Hmmm I'm not sure if it's the same parcel but I know Elsewhere (bar downtown) is building spot right by there but I think it's by Mission Ridge/Discount Tire. It could be that though.

You all know as well as I do, that it will become a 28,000-acre sea of rooftops, chain restaurants and asphalt, just like every other slice of land out this way.
Developers have been drooling over that land for decades, just waiting to pounce.
Probably not wrong, but man it would be nice to go from Stone Oak to the Rim in 5-10 mins instead of sitting on 1604 for 30 mins lol. Not hearing machine guns at 8 am would be nice too.

I know they probably have old contaminated WW II crap buried there though...lol
Yeah moving it down there would be good. I don't have the first clue what goes on there besides them doing shooting drills but I can't imagine them needing THAT much space. It just doesn't make sense to me to have that much unused land on the fastest growing/most congested area of town.

I'm sure they could limit development/make a decent chunk of it a park or something for the aquifer but at least some E-W roads between Blanco and I-10 would be amazing.

It's been in the local news before but they do survival training for medics and downed airmen. I am probably a little off on the terms but that is the general idea. The issue being light pollution and the city/county have been working with JBSA for several years to limit light pollution around Camp Bullis because it interferes with their training.

Hence another good reason to move those operations to Medina Annex. The only thing on one side of all that land is the city dump.

The DoD has told the city that is not an option. It's either train at Camp Bullis or they leave.

Don't know what's going on, but several years ago there was a big hulaballo over developers moving closer to Camp Bullis. They do night training exercises out there. Anyhow they went and told the city that if they don't stop these developers from building so close to the camp, then the military would PULL OUT or words to that effect. And oh yeah, the Golden Cheeked Warbler and some other endangered species like the base. So the city/Bexar County backed down. Not because of the bird, but because the military generates millions of dollars. If the US Military regardless of branch pulled completely out of San Antonio, then you'd see the city circling the drain.Yeah you got all this tech now here and all, but it would hurt the city in a big way in the wallet.

It wouldn’t put a dent in the SA economy if they just pull out of Camp Bullis. Most of the military doing training out there can’t leave the base during their training days anyway. And where is the source for them saying they would “pull out”?

Default Money?

Money will not buy a recharge zone. If those old quarries are in or near a recharge area, probably, they will be protected.
The Edwards Underground Water district will protect these areas alright. Money doesn't always win. Even Elon Musk has to wait on the people charged with the care of this City's drinking water.
Development does not have to be so destructive to the environment if it is designed with this purpose in mind.
I would not bore a tunnel underneath the city.

I grew up in this area. In my 60 years, I have witnessed every new housing and commercial development destroy every plot of land around here. Opposition was there constantly. Petitions, environmental lawsuits, public meetings, raising hell at city hall, etc. Always defeated in the end.
Money wins every time.
