Hi,

I am looking for advice so that I can figure out the best way to handle an issue with uninvited visitors.

We live in a town North of SA, on one side of the house we have a road that is dark at night (no street lights for a section of the street that is 40 feet plus) and for the past 6 months, I find empty beer/soda cans, food containers (with leftover food) or bags of leftovers from fast food restaurants on the road near my front yard, on the sidewalk or on the front lawn (in the area that is in the darkness and has no street lights)
Recently, one night about 11 PM (from inside the house looking out the front window / this is the only window I can use to check the front of the house) I saw a car pull up with the headlights off and park behind our fence (in the dark area) and heard a car door close, then saw that three people started smoking (could not see the faces or any details on the car or etc.).
What is the best way to discourage these folks from visiting our street and eating, smoking, drinking?
To deter them, I thought about putting a camera on the corner of the house outside with a motion detector light (I got to wait and find the right person who can install this for us, so it will not be immediate).

TIA

If the roadway is public not much you can do.

I often find empty beer cans stuck in my plantings by the fence (or in the bed of my truck) as well as assorted other trash.

Report it to the correct jurisdiction who is in charge on the road, city, county, state, etc. report it as illegal dumping to get their attention. Call the news. Ask on neighborhood groups if other neighbors are feeling the same thing.

Default Surely,

For unwanted people around your house.
Show up in person at the Mayor's office. Even if you do not speak to the mayor. State your case.
Call the police. Even if you already have.
Call the Sheriffs office and tell then that "arming yourself is probably the only solution to secure your house from thugs at night".
Call the public works Dept. about your street , tell them that you have uninvited guests at your home every night and that you are going to alert the media next. This is your direct line to the Mayor.
Tell them (public works) that you are next going to call the local fox news outlet and inform them what a lousy mayor you have. "What kind of a city is this? I live in a city(state the name of your city) where our Mayor cannot even assure myself and my family a place to live, in the absence of fear and and feel that this City not a safe place to live. We live in constant fear of being murdered or robbed in our sleep by strangers lurking around my house in the dark. Every night we see them. Still. No police Dept., no Sheriffs."
The more people you can think of to call and state your case to, the better.
You should get an answer. It is probably only kids hanging out with no other place to go and hang out at.
It is worrisome though.
