We went yesterday, the 23rd. We asked the waiter about the plate lunches. He gave us a confused look and said he knew nothing about it. He checked and said that they had a teppan only (can't be served at the sushi bar or regular tables) lunch special that consists of chicken breast and veggies.

So, we decided to give them a chance and ordered "The Big Island" under the 'sashimi' section of the menu. The waiter said it was two pieces each of five different types of fish and a cal roll. Fine.

When it came, there were five total pieces of nigiri sushi and one cal roll. Some of the pieces of fish were odd and I could not identify them. I asked the waiter and he said that he had no idea. I took the opportunity to point out that we were served sushi when we thought we were getting sashimi. He gave a blank look and said that he didn't know, that he was new. I dropped the issue.

Ohanas is perfect for someone who likes Bennihana and HEB sushi. Those who understand real plate lunch and sashimi that was swimming less than 24 hours before meeting your teeth..... caveat emptor.

We'll give them another shot if a true local gives a good review on the plate lunch.

If you are looking for good Hawaiian Food, there is a Nice Family (Realy Hawaiian Grinds) off Austin Highway, It is called Aloha Flowers (during day is a flower/lei shop) and Fridays they do great plate lunch (great grinds) and last Sunday every month they actually have a full Luau. It is great, if you from Hawaii you will really feel at home.

Aloha Mel and Kalani, Welcome to San Antonio. Cibolo not far---only in North East section. Hawaiian food is slow but bumbye coming to area. As someone posted----The Aloha Flowers place on Austin Highway has good plate lunches and Monthly Luau's. Good People and good food. Look them up on the internet.

Unfortunately the Beach is closed, and although some rumors that they are moving closer in, there is still no information yet.

Mark (Kehmay) Arriola, from Kihei, runs the SOGO ("so good") Cafe at 19903 Stone Oak Parkway. Very good food, but has Hawaiian selections only some of the time. Call him at 210-494-8222 and he can tell you when he is cooking Hawaiian food. This restaurant is good and reasonable and good for any outing.

Ohana Grill just opened up on the Northwest side----as you can see---mixed reviews so far.

Hawaiian fusion cuisine pretty good at "Kona Grill" in the La Cantera Shopping Center. And in the other direction, Roy's has a place in Austin.

Good sushi and Japanese food at Fujiya Restaurant on Wurzbach Road.-----also good DimSum and Chinese food at Golden Wok also on Wurzbach Road.

If you're homesick for Island folks and food, You might want to call Don Torres at 695-5500, for information on the San Antonio Hawaiian Club--We're planning to meet next month at Don's House for Island KauKau and Talk Story.

Aloha Brah,

AinaIpo

Thumbs down Ohana's...LOSE MONEY DIS ONE!

After reading other people's positive reviews my wife and I were excited to check this place out...I wish we didn't. We being born and raised on the island of Oahu were expecting a lot. Ohanas didn't deliver. We went with some friends and a friend was late. So they couldn't seat us until our one friend arrived. We had no opportunity to order drinks or look at the menu. When my friend arrived we were taken in to be seated. This place was just another wanna-be Teppanyaki place. This place should be ashamed to say they serve "Hawaiian" food. If you want a poor Teppanyaki show, over-priced food and average service; then check it out. Lau-lau, lomi-lomi salmon, Kalua pig, poi and even Spam musubi is real local Hawaiian food...which Ohanas don't have. This place doesn't even have a Hawaiian atmosphere. Very disappointing...I should open up a Zippy's type restaurant here in SA, Ohanas would definitely go OOB.
