Just a question for those who have been around the area for a while...has San Antonio ever explored building a new airport some distance away from the city? (Think Washington Dulles International Airport vs. Ronald Reagan National Airport.)

[quote=hadleyzoo;3977998]WHOOHOO! (Jumping up and down for joy!) So that means Disney is coming now that the airport is expanding?

No, but Trader Joe's will be building a distribution center in the new terminal.

I believe they have. I have worked at the airport for the past 14 years and there was talk about moving out to Kelly field. Now that Terminal B is going to be built, that won't happen.

It seems like Henry Cisneros proposed an airport between SA and Austin awhile back. IMO, this would be a bad idea as most people love the fact that the SA airport is just a few minutes from downtown and other areas of the city.

They said to look for the ceremony to take place early this month, with a completion date of early 2010.
2010? I will believe it when I see it. There is so much construction out there that they haven't even begun to start on Terminal B. I know the "ground breaking ceremony" has taken place yet, but they have repoured new concrete to strenthen the foundation. That is really all they have done.

They are in the process now of adding on to Terminal 1 to make a walk way to Terminal B. Terminal 2 is going through some changes as well.

I work at the airport and there will be a airport managers meeting tomorrow. I will see how the plans are going and keep y'all informed if anybody really cares

I hope not!

Count me as one of those who loves the fact that the airport is 15 minutes away.

I understand the desire to be close to the airport, but if there is going to be any real growth (larger terminals, more runways, etc.) I'm just not sure if the land area would support said expansion. (I'm not an expert, and haven't done a whole lot of research--just based on what I see when departing/returning the airport.)

I guess I was spoiled living less than 15 minutes from Dulles...tons of routes at all times of the day, major hub, etc. Then again, I love the fact that I never wait more than 15 minutes in line trying to get through security!

Back in the late '80s and early '90s, two options were studied for a new airport: a joint airport with Austin near San Marcos, and a new SAT airport near Castroville. Both ideas were scrapped.

There is room for one more large terminal (Terminal D). There are plans to extend the current general aviation runway that sits just north of the main NW-SE runway to make it available for commerical use. And there are also plans to add an additional parallel commercial runway north of the current airport property line. This would mean buying-out all the businesses between Nakoma and Wurzbach Pkwy.

Here's the airport master plan itself:

Thanks, HwyMan! As always, you're a wealth of information when it comes to anything paved.

Wow that could be costly for them to buy out the existing businesses in that area...
