I'm looking to move from Northern New Jersey to San Antonio with my wife in a couple of years. We're a young couple and enjoy living in a city environment. We'd like to move to a loft or apartment in the downtown area, preferably near the river. I did a quick search on the forum but wasn't able to find any definitive threads on living in the downtown area.

Anyone have any suggestions for particular areas or buildings downtown that we should look into? I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions anyone can give us. We just recently decided we wanted to move to a different area of the country and settled on San Antonio after looking at a number of different cities. Any info regarding downtown as well as the city in general would be greatly appreciated.

If I wasn't so into my cars, I'd love to live in one of the new condo towers they are building downtown.

Thanks to everyone who posted a link. Does anyone have any advice or anything to add for a couple who's thinking of living downtown? Is any area better to live than another down there? Like I said originally, I'd like to live in a city-like environment but I don't want to live in a shady area at all. Thanks again.

Hi npknucks,
I'm somewhat familiar with downtown living. Are you looking to rent or buy (and if buy, buy now or when you move here)? How familiar are you with SA? All of the properties that folks have listed are worth pursuing. And each is very unique (i.e. Vistana is going to be a new mid-rise apartment community with an art deco architecture; CampStreet is adaptive re-use of a candy factory - very artsy, very cool; Vidorra is new construction luxury high-rise condos and townhomes; Cadillac Lofts is an adpative re-use apartment community that was formerly a Cadillad dealership, etc.). And depending upon the person asking, each of the areas these are located in could be considered "shady". That said, I personally would love to live in any of them. Let us know your preferences, and feel free to PM me if you'd like more specifics.

Depends on your preferences. Most neighborhood atmosphere will be King William/Lavaca, condos there are St. Benedicts in fall of '08 San Antonio Lofts Downtown Urban Living in Southtown King William: St Benedict's , and King William Townhomes www.kingwilliamtownhomes.com (http://www.kingwilliamtownhomes.com - broken link) . Well established, very freindly, diverse group of people with everything from artists to military doctors. Lots of local, independent restaurants within walking distance. On the quieter section of the SA River. Area info at Southtown - San Antonio Arts District, San Antonio, TX and King William Association - San Antonio, TX - Home .

More in downtown/high-rise style living is the Vidora and La Cascada. Those are more self-contained projects where you won't be mixing with the surrounding neighborhood as much. Altezza is on top of the Hyatt, prices there will be couple hundred more a SF than all the others.
