Well, I for one would not feel panicked paying $9 a gallon for gas and all of their high taxes if I could rest in the comfort, as most Europeans do, that an adequate and government-backed retirement fund with reasonable medical benefits awaited me.

Well, that's not actually the case in many European countries now, though I do agree the higher taxes in most European countries = more services overall.

I would bask in the comfort of adequate public transportation and good roads. It really is appalling how bad some of the roads are in the US.

It's ok, easy mistake. I have seen it both ways, but more often with a comma.

...I should probably change my screen name to "theknowitall'

$4/gal??? That's a deal where I'm at. Our CHEAP gas is $4.43/gal

Hehe, there's a shell station on New Guilbeau that is at 3.77 or 3.89 depending on the mood of the owner. It flip flops.

You can get some really good deals on trucks and I actually traded in my crossover (station wagon) for one a little over a week ago. The stupid crossover (CX-7) got awful mileage and only burned premium fuel, so I figured what the heck, might as well have V-8 power, more room, better hauling ability, and be higher off the ground.

Yet again, another article that assumes that the more efficient car would be new off the lot... There are plenty of great used ones out there that come at a much lower price.
