I will be relocating to San Antonio for my career next March, and will be working at Randolph AFB.
Any advice on location?
I am a single 24 yr old female from Ohio, and will be moving alone, so safety is very important to me. I also would like a community within easy reach of going out and doing things such as shopping, biking, and hopefully boarding of some sort.

Also, any advice for me to make friends with some born and raised Texans?

Universal City, TX is a nice area close to the main gate, but I don't venture there are a lot of fun social things to do in and around there.

The Forum shopping center is in the Universal City area and I've seen some nice apartments over there. I wouldn't recommend Converse or Kirby. Other cities in that area are Live Oak, Schertz, and Selma. I think Cibolo is a little too far out from everything.

don't move out by schertz unless you want to fight traffic everyday. there are new KB homes in live oak off oconner...if you are looking for apartments then check out the ones off 1604 in liveoak/UC..its not too far from RAFB and liveoak also has a nice city park which is maintained nicely.

I work at RAFB also and I live two streets in front of the main gate in Universal City off Pat Booker Road. I'd like to help you or chat with you if you'd like.

Can't say I've known a lot of younger people that live out in that direction... there have been a very few downtown, some in Alamo Heights, most in north central (Stone Oak and anywhere within about a 7 mile radius), and then fewer as you head west on the arc 1604 makes as it goes west past I-10.

I am into pretty much any kind of boarding. Coming from Ohio, I love to snowboard, yet obviously there won't be much of this in TX.

I have heard that if you drive down to the Corpus Christi you can wind surf, and I am really hoping that there are some kite surfing opportunities, becase I am an avid wakeboarder.

The only kind of boarding sport I have never really gotten into is skateboarding, but if there is nothing else, I may just have to pick up the sport.... thank goodness there is concrete just about everywhere.

You might have to inquire with the local lake enthusiasts but they might have this in some nearby lakes instead of having to go to the coast. I also know Sea World has a ski show, if you like jet skiing, but unsure if that is local talent of if they do summer shows at all Sea Worlds and have to travel.
