I know this is kinda sorta maybe something that should be in the Gardening section, but I also want to know about this plant's chances here in SA so I think it fits the SA section for that reason.

I bought a huge fern at HEB on impulse. They were only labeled as "tropical plants", nothing more. I have no clue what kind of fern it is only that i've seen it before for sure... and I want to know what it is to know how to properly care for it and if I should plant it or leave it potted or whatever. It's too big to hang in a hanging basket I think. It's just gorgeous and BIG!

Actually I bought it for my mom for her birthday coming up, but now I'm in love with it... might have to find something else for her! LOL!

Here is a picture of one that is JUST LIKE mine (but it's not mine):

Should do fine. I have one planted in a large bed with some other plants and it has done VERY WELL. Has doubled in size in the last year. I have another one in a pot that has done well too. They seem to be pretty tolerants of drought. I only water once per week and they are doing fine.

I have mine in a huge pot on my back patio, full sun almost the whole day, and it's doing great--it's huge! HEB had those and ficus trees on sale a couple of months back--they were all like 6.99 each, so I bought 7 ficus trees and the one fern, because I had never had one before. I've been happy with it so far, because it's happy with me.

They are Boston Ferns and do well here...but mine got too much sun in their normal area when I had our huge oak tree trimmed and cleaned up this week...on the back patio now in recovery mode!

If they are in a pot, just ensure you cover with a sheet during a freeze....they WILL freeze out!

Mine like moisture and feeding for sure!

Wow, this is unbelievable!!! I saw the pic first before I read the replies and thought "oh, that's a Boston Fern....they're houseplants!" Well they are, at least back in KY where I'm from! But then I read on and saw that in this area looks like they can be planted outdoors and survive!! Holy Cow, that's cool!!!! I'm starting to think about plants and planting now that we're moving into our house this week.....(yippeee!!!!). I've already been looking around to see what things I might want to go ahead and plant.

BTW, anybody know where's the best place to get good prices on patio containers around here??

We loaded up at Garden Ridge--they had all theirs at 50% off one week. You just have to watch for their ads. Also, try Maria Lindo (????) I think is the name, at Braun-ish and 1604. They sell some of their Mexican pots for CHEAP. Then my favorite, just cuz the lady is such a sweetie, is on Eckhert Rd. next to a bar called Around the Bend or At the Bend--it's where Eckhert Rd. bends.

Hobby Lobby, too--just don't buy anything there if it's not on sale--it will be 50% off the next time you're in there and you'll get mad, if you're like me!
