I'm sure that was a vacant field . Then we knew they were preparing to build the mall. I drove around that sucker everyday and can't remember Squat. I remember Woolco but have always remembered it being where Spartan Atlantic or Globe were later near Flores and also Roosevelt.
Spartan Atlantic was on the corner of Roosevelt and Military. Globe (my dad worked there for a while) was where K-Mart was, next to Chuck E. Cheese's. Woolco was where Mervyn's is now. I remember because I worked there when I was 19.

Yes, but Lackland was not in the Harlandale area. I do remember when they started showing XXX movies there, though! *lol*

Man I must have been in a daze back then or i'm just to old. No Lackland would be south san . Did you know the little Church's Fried Chicken at the corner of Somerset Rd. and Military was the first ever built ? Aside from the original downtown that is? They started out that location operating out of a trailer. Then they worked it out with the property owner to build the building. It's been there as far back as I remember along with the old rap around the corner gas station that used to be there.

Circle 81 was at Zarzamora and New Laredo Hwy. Certainly not Harlandale. Loop 13 right across Military from South Park isn't Harlandale either.
Do you remember Gibson's and Shoppers World?

The Comet! Yeah! We used to go to the ice house and my dad would walk across to the Church's to buy chicken. My SO worked at that Church's while in high school. He said it was the #9.

Circle 81 maybe not...but I'm thinking in terms of Harlandale School District, which would have made Loop 13 Harlandale. So, ! *lol*

I remember both! I worked at the concession area of Shopper's World for a while.

That's it, Comet. The # designation doesn't mean anything I'm sure it was numbered tha way for other reasons.

You may be right I just never considered anything west of I-35 as Harlandale area. Our church when I was little was right across Military from where South Park Mall is now . Kinda behind Loop 13 Drive in . We could watch movies from behind our church. In those day we lived off Flores close to Military Dr. But, occasionally we would run down to that Church's and get Chicken.

I practically watched them build Shoppers World and Gibson's I think around the same time. Probably 1963 0r 1964. I'd go with my Parents on League bowling night every week at Southside Bowling Alley. Of course all the building going on it was right there.

Was the church in that building that is now behind the Jack in the Box? I think it's a Centro del Barrio clinic now.

Remember the big slide they had at the Shopper's World parking lot?

Wasn't the bowling alley where Grady's is now?
