Lauren, where exactly on Blanco is Dough? My friend was telling me she heard about a great pizza place on Blanco inside 410 but couldn't remember the name. Thanks!

'

You won't see it if you just drive down Blanco. Turn in next to the Denny's near 410 it is in the middle of that strip center with West Marine.

We finally made the drive to Big Lous as we were really wanting good pizza. Loved it! Wish they had a bigger menu of other Italian items though. Just got me wondering what else is in this area that's not a chain and doesn't break the bank.
Cheezy Janes: on Broadway now that Billy T's closed
Chris Madrid's: is also good for burger's Blanco & Hollywood
W.D. Deli Broadway: near Mulberry
Lion & Rose: A chain, but least only local with 2 locations.
Not on the cheap side, but we like Silo
Cappy's: is also good, but not cheap
Lorenzo's: Fredericksburg & Medical
Demo's: Greek 410 & Blanco
Longhorn Cafe: Blanco Road Closer to 1604 than 410
Josephine St. Cafe: Josephine & Broadway (Practically under 281)
Houston Street Bistro: Downtown, but make a reservation if something is going on at the Majestic
410 Diner: Broadway near 410.
Sea Island: Another chain, but local and for cheap Sea Food it can't be beat.
BBQ Station: 410 near Harry Wurzbach

I recommend all of the above...

I wouldn't call these mom&pop's, but they're independent (not chains at least...some may have changed ownership recently):

Bubblehead (altho now 2 of the owners are a mom and pop )
La Frite
Azuca
Rosarios
Biga on the Banks
Acenar (co-owned by the Biga folks and Rosario's folks)
Cascabel
All the Thai places...there are a number I frequent (a couple I dislike too)
Just about all the Indian places, but my favourite is India Oven on Patricia St
Sandwich de Paris
Bohanan's
Silo
Taco Haven
Blue Star
Madhatters

not sure if it's independent or not, I've not heard of it before - Pasha. Excellent!!!

and there are others...I am drawing a blank now.

Henry's Puffy Tacos has been owned and run by the same family since it opened in 1978. I haven't eaten in their new location on Bandera just outside 410, but I have heard mixed reviews about it.
