If you're looking for a fun event that truly IS about art, check out the Second Friday artwalk every month in Tobin Hill. The next event is Friday, May 14. You can find info at: Tobin Hill Art | Facebook (//www.facebook.com/tobinarts#!/tobinarts?v=wall - broken link) There is a map with the venues at: Tobin Hill Art | Facebook (//www.facebook.com/tobinarts#!/photo.php?pid=228701&o=all&op=1&view=all&subj=1163 80585057985&aid=-1&id=100000275762855&fbid=121649577854234 - broken link) This is a growing event that has been held monthly for almost one year, and attendees are typically focused on the art and meeting other art lovers. Tobin Hill won't let their art walk become another circus like Southtown. Come out and check it out!

Blue Star is mainly for those interested in contemporary arts, but they do have several galleries that are more traditional or photographic in nature.

First Friday is dead in terms of it being truly artsy. It's turned into Fiesta. I'd suggest looking into First Thursday, also based at Blue Star Arts Complex, as well as the Tobin Art Walk mentioned above.

Unfortunately, you are right. It was really nice at first, but just like any other event around here, it has turned into a drunkfest. Looks like a flea market now.

I have friends that have a glass-blowing and woodcraft shop down around Blue Star, and they always have a decent turn out without all the rif-raff. The area down there is really nice and peaceful at night...never once felt uncomfortable walking around looking at the different shops and historic homes in the area. Hope it stays that way.

Without going too far off topic... Blue Star is attempting to put itself back together with a current renovation along South Alamo. Lots of demo going on, new windows, new commercial leases being signed (Starbucks is one, as unbelievable as it sounds)- All in prep for what will soon start happening at Big Tex just down the road.

While I hate seeing non-Southtowners treat the hood like a drunken garbage dump, there are wheels in motion that will keep this the main arts district in San Antonio. Now if we could only get rid of the damned taco stands and trinkety-crap tents that line South Alamo during First Friday. They have nothing to do with art and come into the hood only for profit.

The opening of the "All School" exhibitionat Southwest School of Art last Thurs (7/19) had almost 500 people come by -- working artists, collectors, their friends, etc. A GREAT scene, with particularly interesting work this year.
