I have my BA in psychology and I do not know what to do with it. I want to get my doctorate and practice family and marriage counseling, but that is on hold until my children are older. Can anyone help me? I have no idea what I can do with this seemingly worthless degree.............

The Probation department is always hiring. They do have a specialized Mentally impaired unit. Also, Parole, CPS, MHMR all hire people with psychology degrees.

Take that psychology degree and think outside the box. Perhaps sales of some sort. You'd be amazed at how well you can do in something like that if you understand the way people think and how to work with different personalities.

I was in the same boat as you with an undergrad degree in psychology and english. It was a lot of fun to work towards but didn't translate well into post-school employment without a continued education degree or teacher's license. I ended up falling into property management completely by coincidence, and I am now planning on making a career of it. If you enjoy working with people and having a day full of varied activities, it might be worth looking into. I am a military wife (AF) and I feel that property management is a great career for my lifestyle because there will always be apartment complexes pretty much anywhere you go, and there is a high turnover rate in the industry so jobs are pretty easy to come by. The only real qualification you need to break into the field is a people-oriented personality and a good work ethic, and with experience you can rise quickly. Having a degree will give you a boost as it's common for property management professionals not to have them.

Honestly, I think that although a psych degree doesn't qualify you for much without a master's or Ph.d, it's going to be useful in any field in which you work with people. Having an understanding of the basic motivations and thought processes of your average human being will aid you in any job working with the public. Use the cover letter of your resume to your advantage and talk this fact up!

You might also try the Juvenile Probation Department.

I'm a community organizer for a small non-profit with an undergrad degree in psychology. I found it very hard to get into the MHMR, CPS, case management field without some sort of professional experience. I still don't know if this is what I want to do forever, it could lead me in a good direction, possibly a Masters in Public Administration instead of Psychology or Counseling, but who knows.

Like mentioned before, consider the sales route, I did it for a bit and loved the people I worked with. Also look into local unions and see if they need organizers they love psychology people. I never thought that's where i would be after I graduated.

You might also check with the bases. The Family Support Center often will hold job seminars and will give you some tips on where to start hunting for jobs and give various resources in the area. They might even do one-on-one by appointment? I know they used to many years ago and I utilized their services at that time.
