Forbes Magazine called San Antonio "sleepy" do you really think San Antonio is sleepy or is it again a form of media bias.

Ma Bell part 2, Valero Energy, HEB, Clearchannel, etc.. oh and low unemployment! What a sleepy town, I would never want to move there.

It's an injustice that the national media looks down on this city as often as it does. Honestly, I never saw why.

Sleepy meaning non-fast paced like Dallas, New York, LA, or Chicago.

There's nothing wrong with it. It seems as though a particular illegal substance is very popular here among everyone (even businessmen), maybe that has something to do with it!

Cause they can't get a direct flight to SA. It stinks. It's like Indy to Houston -Cheap. Indy to Dallas -Cheap Indy to Austin - Little more. Indy to SA - double plus you have to stop in Dallas or Houston.

The way I look at it, SA is one of the best kept secrets in america.

Touche -- I can't agree more with that statement. I have yet found a direct flight to/from San Antonio from any of my final destinations.

Again that is another statement I cannot agree more with. I had no idea how wonderful San Antonio was until I moved here.

It also doesn't help that Texas has two other larger metropolitan areas about triple the size of metro San Antonio that seem to have a lot of the population, the businesses, the airline hubs and their routes, etc. And having Austin as a close 4th in size breathing down your neck doesn't help either.

If SA had the state to itself like Atlanta has Georgia or Indianapolis has Indiana, then I bet we wouldn't be having this conversation. I agree with irnag though..my old hometown is a well-kept secret and will always be a jewel to me.

Yes, but if you also look into California... cities like San Francisco and San Diego, all sharing roughly the same size markets, have better media reviews than San Antonio.

Wow -- blows me away that SF area is that big especially considering the size of the city itself. I would have never guessed Again, touche.

As far as sleepy city goes, I still have to disagree mainly because of all the economic growth we are experiencing. I would understand more if our growth was capped and remained at status quo.

I guess I am a little surprised at Forbes saying that. Other financial news sources have actually talked up the strength of the corporations based here.

But as for California and the East Coast, there is so much money flying around. Its hard to compare. I always thought Dallas was kind of pricey and thought of as the it town. I would say its a trade off. So its sleepy, at least it's affordable.

And can someone explain to me how SA can be the 7th largest city but the 37th largest market? Did they not count Helotes? Is Dallas a seperate market from Ft. Worth?

I once heard a story that they wanted to build a theme park (Astroworld) in SA. But the mayor at the time, I believe it was Becker, was against it and ultimately they went to Houston. I think there was a conscious effort to maintain a certain air of small town to SA. I can't confirm this, so I don't know if its true.
