i am looking for a new bicycle in San Antonio. I am having little luck with Craigslist and I was wondering if pawn shops around here are trustworthy. Can anyone tell me with real knowledge if the pawn shops around here are as shady as one might suspect?

i am looking for a mountain bike with a 16-18" (medium) frame that i can use to commute to work and ride some trails on weekends. basically a all-purpose bike.

Buying from a Pawn Shop "You Must know what You are buying" Most shops buy for very little $ and then mark the price High for resale. A lot of Bike shops do take trade in on bikes when some one is upgrading their bike. That is if it is a good bike to start with, pawn shops things are usally things that some one is hard up for money and need's it quick so they are willing to take the low dollar amount.
Craig's list does work and remember the price being "asked" is a starting price that goes for a pawn shop also.
What ever you buy look it over good before you put $ out.
Good Luck

Rather than a pawn shop, I would start with some of the bike shops--they may have a "for sale" board in their stores for customers who are upgrading their bikes. It would be more reassuring to me to spend my money on a bike, buying from someone who knows a little more about them than Pawn Shop Pete.

I have my bike on consignment at Cycle Logic right now. They have TONS of new and used bikes and seem to have a pretty good rep among bike riders I've talked to - otherwise they wouldn't have my bike right now!!

Hank Cunningham still operates Helotes Bike Shop on Old Bandera
Road, and if you've got time, definitely check it out. He never knew my name, but he ALWAYS remembered every detail of my bike. He and his wife made significant efforts to save Government Canyon.
Ride on!

If you are going to do any serious riding, steer clear of department store bicycles. Spend at least a few hundred dollars and get one from a bike shop or a name brand that is a bicycle manufacturer (Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, etc...not Huffy!).

Department store bikes are heavy and have cheap components...and they are usually poorly assembled by uneducated (when it comes to building bikes) employees.

In other words, pay now or pay later.

Cheers! M2

THANK YOU!
Your advice speaks loud and clear. My son was a cycling national champion, and we can't preach enough about how important a GOOD bike is. Not only are cheapies more difficult to ride, thus limiting enjoyment and ability, those inferior components can be hazardous.
This is actually a good time to negotiate on a decent bike, as the racing season comes to an end, and before Christmas.

I know what i am looking for. i have been riding bikes seriously for over 15 years and i used to be a mechanic at a high-end bicycle shop in Indianapolis. i know better than to ride any Huffy crap. i just happen to be on a tight budget, so i can't spend a lot. no new bikes for now.

if i find a decent bike at a pawn shop, what guarantee do i have that the bike is not stolen?

i will try cycle logic tomorrow and that bikemojo site. last time i called Helotes Bicycle, they didn't have anything in my price range.
