I know everyone likes the older historic parts of the city, but do you have a particular favorite place?

I asked a friend once what his favorite part of the city was. He said heading south on San Pedro going towards San Antonio College. I was very surprised by his answer at the time. But the more I thought about it it made sense.

I've always liked the stretch of Hildebrand between San Pedro and Broadway.

What about you?

I've always liked Tobin Hill. Some parts of it are so beautiful yet broken and sad all at once.

Around San Antonio College. Sure most of it has fallen to the ghetto (shameful that people let it happen) but classic houses like the Koehler house are totally worth the trip to see.

Reading the title - I was just gonna answer "The Alamo?"

But truthfully, there is this old rock house on Evan's Rd that we drive past to go toward Nacogdoches Rd. I just love that it is still there and hope it stays. I love finding things like that - there are a few up 281 as well.

Both are excellent drives. In my opinion, you could add any portion of Monte Vista or old Alamo Heights to the mix.

Although it might not be that "old", I've always been partial to the drive on 281 from the Quarry Market into Downtown. You go through this lush green area (free from billboards, hmmm), with condos in the distance to your left. As you make the curve near Alamo Stadium, the downtown skyline is unveiled. An absolute incredible entrance into SA.

As far as walking, the portion of the San Antonio river in the King William area also has some very beautiful sights.

Please elaborate. Don't take my statement as a criticism, I just want to know a little more about why you think it represents the Southside.

I think it reflects a time when the Harlandale area was kind of its own community. The old commercial buildings are just really cool - that portion of S. Flores just seems like the commercial district of a small town. You have the old gas station, the post office (one of the smallest I've ever seen), the 2-story commercial building w/ apartments on top (the Harlandale building, I believe). It's just an interesting place.
