For those of you that are 'transplants' (sounds wierd to say that), I wanted to know what you did to settle in to San Antonio. Was it easy to get acquainted with your surroundings, or did you feel like a fish out of water for a long time?
Being young, I'm pretty nervous to just up and leave all I'm familiar with to come to a new city, and basically a new way of life! I need all the advice I can get on settling in and making my own little life in San Antonio!

When I first moved here, I would drive all around the city and purposely get myself lost. You wouldn't believe how quickly you can learn street names, landmarks and shortcuts. Once you know where things are, you don't feel like such an outsider anymore.

buy a map book, only thing that has kept me from getting lost more than i have and occasionally i still get lost but the map book helps. Welcome to San antonio.

Get a compass for your car, drive to the opposite side of the city, and cut through. Do it a few times taking different routes. Also, try to avoid using A/C in your car as much as possible to adapt to the heat and humidity faster.

We drove around, a lot, with the a/c on. We don't adapt to heat we just use lots of a/c. Have a goal in mind if you want, we needed to find a vet, locate a pediatrician, a dentist, a doctor, figure out where the nearest ER was (both people and pet), etc. Better to figure out how to get there and get aquainted with the drive and the traffic when you aren't having an emergency than when you are. If you have a hobby or a favorite type of food scope out those places too.

Get settled into your residence then get out and meet your new neighbors. Don't expect folks to stop by and welcome you to the neighborhood (although some will) do it yourself.
