Someone told me about this place when I first moved here. Knowing that "Cupcake Bakeries" are the new trend, I thought I would give it a try

I stopped in on Saturday afternoon. I wanted to get a cupcake for myself as well as one for my friend whom has just gotten into a car accident and was down in the dumps.

First off, it is pretty basic in there. Just a few tables and chairs, and the bakery case.

I was suprised they did not have any type of coffee bar there (as far as I could tell)

Cupcakes: They had quite a large variety of cupcakes. I was actually suprised at the variety. They had several different types, including filled ones. I settled on, after much deliberation, a Chocolate Cheesecake and a Pineapple Cheesecake Cupcake. And I was actually suprised, the price for both was 5.00. I was expecting it to be about that much for just one.

They were placed into a very presentable gift box. Very nice looking.

They also had cookies and pies for sale as well

Ok. So I brought the cupcakes to my friends house for us to share. We split them. First off, these cupcakes are very large. They also looked delicious, with very nice frosting jobs.

However, I was not that impressed with how they tasted. I don't know if my expectations were too high or what, but I was not overly impressed. I mean they tasted good, and the frosting was good, but, overall, they just weren't what I was expecting from a Gourmet Cupcake place. I, as well as my friend, agreed that they were kind of dry. I would have thought they would have been richer and more moist than they were. The actual cake part seemed kind of bland to me.

While, I would give it another chance, or 9, I wouldnt rate this place at an A level. I would give it a solid B-. I am hoping I caught it on a bad day, or that some other factor changed my perception.

Has anyone else tried this place?

Yup. ONCE. Won't go back to a place that the main baker smokes in front of his own shop, wipe his hands on his apron and goes back to the kitchen.

I think this place was discussed in the Potranco thread...

I couldn't agree with you more. Everything you said is exactly what I thought. They were dry and bland cupcakes, and not worth what you pay for them. I go to Confeddis in the strip on Bandera. They are about the same, but their cupcakes taste a little better and the owners are always very polite!

I had the same experience, only I would rate them a C at best.

I agree with everyone here. Loved the selelction. Not the taste.
The one and only time I went, was the day that there was a big accident right out front on Potranco. The man working there (owner, maybe??) was outside chatting it up with the other business owners. When we walked up, he wasnt too thrilled we *interrupted* his excitement for the day.

I have also tried it once last October. They had a cute selection of Halloween cupcakes but they tasted like they maybe had been frozen and thawed out? They were very dry. I was really excited when they opened up, thought it would be a cute place to get treats for the kids' birthday parties, etc...but I won't be going back.

BINGO!!! I bet you're right! We went there "once" also.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure that the owner is the parent of one of the kids at my little girls' school, and made the cakes for the graduation ceremony this past school year. Everyone was raving about how wonderful the cakes were. I didn't try them, so don't know. But maybe the cakes were fresh?

I also found the cupcakes at the place on Bandera/1604 to be very blah. Nothing spectacular taste-wise. Very pretty and a lovely shop, but the cupcakes. Meh. I'd rather just make them myself.

Mmmmmm........ cake....... !!!!! Me, too!

Luckily my daughter is making a Red Velvet cake to bring to our house tomorrow night for a family birthday party! Woo hoo!!! She makes divine cakes! (Maybe that's why I'm so picky about them?? )
