Twice in the past week I have had young ladies coming to my door selling magazines. Well they say that they are earning points towards job training or college. Both ladies had different stories. Anyway was wondering if anyone else has encountered these people and if this business is legitimate. The one last night asked me if I had any food for her. I told her dinner wasn't ready yet and gave her a banana to go away.

What area are you in? I wouldn't think a legitimate person would ask for food. Maybe call someone and report it. I had a friend get caught up in this back in the 70's. It was not good.

Does your community require registration to go door to door? If so, ask the person to provide proof. Otherwise, tell them to go away.

Someone came to my in-laws' door Saturday night selling magazines, claiming it helped them with college somehow. This was in Helotes.

One kid came to my door a few years ago, and gave me a speel about his mom/aunt/grandma being "Denise" up the street, did I know her? No, oh well she said she knew you... He definitely wasn't dressed that great and he was highly offended when I didn't order, he muttered something as he walked away and I watched him walk away to make sure he didn't key my car or something. I know of situations where that has happened, or they do other rude things to your house. Usually you never find out the name of the company or the name they give is false, so they know they won't get caught - unless I guess you caught them and called the cops right away.

We get them on a regular basis in northern Virginia and just tell them, "No thanks." There aren't any ordinances against this type of sales there. I can't imagine they could be successful enough to benefit a company hauling them around, but they certainly do so they must get enough takers to make it worthwhile.

I would advise against buying anything from these door to door magazine salespeople.
It may not be a scam, in that you may actually get your magazines someday, but it is not a good idea to support the companies.
In addition, a lot of these salespeople do victimize their "customers" and the kids themselves are victims of the companies they work for. Of course not ALL may be like that, but there is enough evidence to support that it's probably not a good idea to buy from them.
