I dont understand this. How do you get an alarm installed with out paying for monitoring , but just the loud sound? is that possible? Do you just pay the installation fee?

You purchase one direct...mine came off ebay but there are plenty that will sell them to you. You will pay the cost of 7-10 months of monitor for the alarm but that beats 3 year.

I agree with the 2nd post that monitor is pretty useless especially at $30+ a month. If you want something monitor cheap try https://nextalarm.com I am not sure if they service this are or not. X10.com and smarthome.come also offer something.

Also if you have an alarm from a previous owner you can usually get it working without having it monitored.

I think anything is better than nothing at all, but SVG's system of dogs and lots of weapons is probably the best one.

How do the alarms work if you have time warner digital phone? Can most alarms with with digital phone service, or will you need a hardwire phone line?

I'm in your situation, and have been researching this as well. There is at least one option (with nextalarm) that allows you to purchase a separate control box that gives you a GSM cellular alert/phone line. Not sure of the details on it yet, but it seems there are ways around this.

Will my monitored security system work with Digital Phone service? | Time Warner Cable | San Antonio (http://www.timewarnercable.com/SanAntonio/site.faqs/DigitalPho/Installati/Will-my-monitored-security-sys - broken link)

I have TWC's digital phone and a Brinks security system and they do work just fine together. I did have to get an upgrade board from Brinks, but that was several years ago and I would think they would have it built in now. It definitely works because I test it and it shows up on their website as a test.
I don't know why TWC says their phone service won't work without power because the modem has two batteries in it and it works without power. You can test it by removing the power plug. In order to reset the modem you have to unplug it and take the batteries out.
