Basically, there are two kinds of civilian jobs on military bases. Government Service (GS), and contractors. The latter are easier to get, but are on a yearly basis (with option years).

For GS jobs, go to USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site and look up jobs in the SA area.

For contracting jobs, you can check around the area for companies that have contracts at the local bases. I work for one that does have computer jobs, but I am not sure if any are open and I am also unsure if I can post the names of companies on here. However, if you want to DM me and send a resume my way, I'll be happy to take a look at it.

Education, experience and certifications are what program managers look for when hiring for IT jobs, so be sure to list everything you've got.

Also keep in mind that the better-paying jobs require security clearances. Most contractors have them from prior military service, but you can still get one if you've never had one before. Just be aware that it is a long process and that your life is scrutinized pretty severely; so if you have any history that may prevent you from getting a clearance, it is better that you admit that up front as being eligible for a clearance is a requirement for certain jobs. No clearance? No job...

Cheers! M2

Are you applying for government civil service jobs (usajobs.com)? If so...expect to wait and wait and wait. It's not a fun thing I know...I've been there myself.

True, I forgot to mention that GS jobs (aka civil service) take a while. I should have also mentioned that were a clearance is required for some jobs, it is not for all although I believe a background check is also done for non-clearance positions.

What most folks do is take contractor jobs for a few years then start pursuing a GS position. We just had several contractors get civil service jobs. I may do that one day, but for now my company is paying for my second masters degree and I will stay with them for a few years to repay them for that.

Cheers! M2

Definitely check with USAJOBS. Beware of those listed on mainstream job sites, like Hotjobs or Monster - lots of 'fakers'...

If you can get the contracting company websites, you can check their own listings. Most are probably on USAJOBS but you never know! SAIC, NCI, etc. Lots of big players in SA.

On a related note- I am interested in the same type of job, what certifications are the best to get? CCNA? MCSA? Any others I should look into?

If you had an MCSA/MCSA, CCNA, or SCSA and a TS/SCI clearance, I could pretty much guarantee you a job tomorrow. Has to be one of those and the clearance, though. SSCP or CISSP would be a double bonus.

Just a note, you don't need to have the clearance but you will need to get one. However, if you already have a TS/SCI clearance you've got a much better chance of landing a job....

Where I work it's not an option. We have one govy, but he's not going to be an escort every day. And we need people now, not in 6 months when/if they get a clearance.

No, what I mean is you can apply and get your TS/SCI after you are hired. I know that seems odd considering that the vast majority of folks working for our company (and others) are hired already having their clearances, but that is not always the case.

However, as I said previously, it does help tremendously if you already have your clearances!
