I'm 18, no car, no diploma or GED and broke.

All I have is a tent and the will to survive. Any public land, cheap camping arrangements or something of the sort I can look into?

I would do a shelter, but I'd more than likely get lice and all of my stuff stolen. What are my options?

What about Job Corps? They'll help you get the GED and give you a place to live while you do it, then teach you a trade.

There's only one shelter in San Antonio. The business community didn't like having the homeless camping out downtown, so they pushed for the creation of one big shelter. City council changed the laws to make it impossible for the private shelters to continue to operate.

Haven for Hope - Transforming and Saving Lives

Haven for Hope of Bexar County
1 Haven for Hope Way
San Antonio, Texas 78207
Main Line - (210) 220-2100
After Hours PCY - (210) 220-2486

Call them and tell them your concerns about lice and stolen stuff. My guess is they have that covered somehow.

Or call the United Way at 211 to learn about other options.

but you have access to the internet no doubt?

There are literally hundreds of jobs in the classifieds if you are willing to take a chance.

MapQuest Maps - Driving Directions - Map
Well, I know you don't need driving directions, but this is a map with shelters and more info.

Call 211 (or look up their website for shelters. This is the United Way). There is more than one shelter, Seton Home, Guadalupe Home, the Salvation Army....

And just because someone is homeless doesn't mean they don't have access to a computer. The internet is free at all libraries.

Job Corps will also provide transportation to get to their location in San Marcos.

One advantage of taking your GED tests there is that there's no waiting period to retest if you fail a section. Otherwise, you have to wait a couple of months to test again.

They also give you an allowance, I think it's about $25 every two weeks...not a lot but since they're providing food, a place to stay, laundry facilities and soap, and basic health and dental care, you don't really need a lot of cash to survive while you're there.

I also think Job Corps might be the best option for you.

Reach out to the SA Food Bank. They provide more services than just food/pantry assistance. They can help you locate programs and options that may be available to you.

Good Luck!
