We just moved here and all we know about is Zio's and Olive Garden. Are there any good locally owned italian places (nothing fancy) in this general area?

Reggianos Restaurant San Antonio Texas is local and might be fancier than you intended

Europa Deli & Market is very casual, locally owned and has quite a few Italian specialties.

There's a Macaroni Grill just west of Costco on 1604.

Aldino's and Johnny Carino's are on 1604 just west of Blanco Rd. Aldino's is locally owned and a bit on the fancy side, IMO.

There are a couple of very recently-opened Italian restaurants on 1604 at Huebner Rd. and NW Military. They're so new that I don't even remember their names. I think they're both chains, but I'm not sure.

West of those on 1604 is Paesano's, which is just east of IH-10. It's locally owned.

BTW, local folks will be interested to know that I noticed the other day that Boccone's on West Avenue has closed. That's a local Italian restaurant that has been in SA at different locations for quite a few years.

Try Capparrelli's at Broadway and 410. A little bit of a drive from Stone Oak, but not too bad.

There is (or at least there WAS, not sure if it's even still open) but last time I was by there, there was a Capparelli's on Huebner and Bitters. Much closer to the OP, and it was good the one time I ate there--albeit a bit different from the one at Huebner and Babcock.

There's also one at Thousand Oaks/Jones-Maltsberger, which is closer.

Tresca opened up recently on Sonterra. We went once and thought the food was very good, as well as the service and ambiance. Prices are not inexpensive, but not pricey either.

Boccones had been bounced back and forth from the original owners to new owners, back to the original, then to one of the partners. The Boccone's that closed was far from the original.

FWIW, Julian (Julian's Pizza) was much of the driving force behind both (the orginal) Boccones and Bambino Huey.

I love Julians! I'm not surprised about Boccones closing, it was never really busy when we went. It can't be location, that hole-in-the-wall looking Quicksands in the same strip center is always busy and Habaneros does well there to.
I heard Little Italy near Blanco & West was really good and authentic too, it's not too far from 1604.

I am looking for no Bs franchise restaurant but the real deal. Even if you have to wait an extra 15 minutes to get your meal. Houston and New Orleans are the only two cities in this area where you can really get the real deal

Aldinos is great! It goes both ways! Fancy or not... I go on Sunday in a track suit and flipflops. Ask for Gustavo for a waiter. In the evening, go fancy whatever... everybody is nice. The owners are there most of the time to greet you. There also is a capperellis on Huenber near bitters
