We're thinking of relocating to Kerrville. We are a growing family, with a 5 year old son and 18 month old daughter. Is it family friendly? It seems that there are a lot of retirees. Will that be the overriding atmosphere? Is it fun for families, too? What kinds of activities are there for kids? Are the schools good? All of the other posts I see seem to be from singles and retirees. Thanks!!

We're moving to Kerrville in July for my wife's new job and are really looking forward to it. We have a 16-month-old and a baby due right before we move. We've visited only once, so I have limited information to offer, but I'll certainly try.

Kerrville seems very family friendly to us. There are several parks and lots of restaurants. There's a decent mall (considering the town's small size) and a nice little downtown area. There are quite a few summer camps down the road. Its relatively mild weather makes Kerrville a nice place to be outdoors much of the year. And it's all of 30-40 minutes to shopping in the outskirts of NW San Antonio. Other than the camps, I'm not sure what organized activities there are for kids, though.

We've heard good things about the schools. I could ask our contacts about specific ones if you want because realtors can't be very candid about such things.

We've also heard that it's a big retirement area. I assume that's part of the reason real estate is more expensive there. But one really nice thing about more retirees is a quieter town!

A friend drove us all over town showing us the various neighborhoods, and we saw a lot to like. I think there are only a couple sketchy areas to avoid, though even those aren't exactly East St. Louis. I'd say my biggest complaint in looking at houses is the dearth of four+ bedroom homes. We've seen a surprising number of fairly large 3/2 homes, which I assume is a byproduct of the retiree population.
