I had to pick a good title

Why in the h... does .... (forgot the channel) show Jay Leno and then instead of showing Conan O'brian they show Scrubs and then Conan O'brian starts about 12:10am.

I've lived in 3 different cities before coming to San Antonio and all of them showed Conan O'brian right after Jay Leno.

At least they now show Letterman on time...or do they??? For years, KENS played "Friends" for an hour, first.

Who knows. Channel 5 used to show "Friends" after the news and then run Letterman after that. Thirty minutes late.

The Tonight Show (Jay Leno) moved to prime time, so it's now on at 9:00 PM CST (10:00 PM EST) and thanks for reminding me, I could never stay up late enough for it during its normal slot.

Simple answer... WOAI makes more money from the commercials in Scrubs, even after paying the syndication fees, than NBC would pay them to show Conan at 11:35.

That's also why KENS was one of the very last CBS stations in the USA to show Letterman at 10:30.

The business of TV is selling audiences to advertisers. Most of the public think it's only about ratings... ratings are only a part of the equation.

I'm a little confused about what you are saying,
can you explain it a little better how they make more money by putting Scrubs in there.

Network: Everything a network sends down to the local stations (except NFL football), it pays the local station clearance fees to show. These clearance fees are not big. The network also gives the station less than 2 minutes of commercial time to sell as local commercials per half hour in each network show.

Syndication: Stations pay per-episode fees for the rights to show syndicated shows like Scrubs. In exchange for that fee, they usually get to sell ALL of the commercial time in that half-hour or hour. The average network TV show is about 22 minutes long, which leaves about 8 minutes of commercial time the station can sell.

So WOAI pays the Scrubs syndicator medium-size bucks to show each episode. It also sells about 8 minutes of local commercial time in each half-hour episode, from which it makes money.

WOAI could be showing Conan at 11:35 and getting paid a slightly-bigger clearance fee than it receives for showing it at 12:10, when audiences are smaller. It would also get just 2 minutes per half-hour of commercial time to sell. No matter what it's selling for, that's just 25% of what it can make off of selling 8 minutes of commercials during Scrubs.

We can infer that the total income from the additional 6 commercials is greater than the amount WOAI is paying for Scrubs, since that's where they make a profit, or they wouldn't make this choice. So WOAI pays more, sells more commercials and makes more off of Scrubs than it would be paid, selling and making off of Conan at 11:35.

There could be reasons other than revenue involved, like having been told by their corporate owners to run Scrubs at a certain time of day, but the reason for this type of choice comes down to revenue most of the time. Maybe someday, a programming or sales employee of WOAI will find this thread and fill in some of the blanks.

Then get people to not watch Scrubs after the news which will drop its ratings, which reduces the amount WOAI can sell the commercials for, which will drive WOAI to switch to Conan.

Leno doesn't move to 9P till the fall. Conan takes over "Tonight" in May.
