Robbery is technically defined as theft by means or threat of violence or force. Otherwise, it's just theft, like pickpocketing or shoplifting. None of the reports I saw actually mentioned whether the girls were threatened, whether a weapon was brandished, or whether the punk assaulted any of them, so I would assume he just walked-up and swiped it, which would indeed not technically be robbery.

Here is the Texas penal code definition of robbery:

Quote:
Sec. 29.02. ROBBERY.
(a) A person commits an offense if, in the course of committing theft as defined in Chapter 31 and with intent to obtain or maintain control of the property, he:
(1) intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causes bodily injury to another; or
(2) intentionally or knowingly threatens or places another in fear of imminent bodily injury or death.
(b) An offense under this section is a felony of the second degree.

Well, I still don't think it's been "sensationalized"--it's a pretty sickening story. These were 9 year old girls. Call it whatever makes y'all happy, but two little girls were separated from their money, and they did not give any consent for that LOSER to take it.

Has anyone pointed out the fact that an adult left little children alone... holding 250 dollars of cash?

What a dumb idea.

I'm not disagreeing with you in the slightest.

Yes, I understand. I just can't see how people can try to place blame on the kids, or an unknown addiction, or the untruth that the leader wasn't there with the girls. The "Blame the Victim" game just pi$$es me off.

It seems clear to me...two girls scouts and an adult leader were selling cookies in front of a store just like we've seen around town all over the place. Some scumbag walks up like he's looking to buy some cookies, and grabs the cashbox and runs. The only thing missing would be his staring down the barrel of a .45! I guess not all stories can have a happy ending!

And it is not like I wouldn't be humane about it, I would be more than happy to shoot this scum in non-life threatening places! But he would have to find a new way to go to the bathroom afterwards...

Cheers! M2

Its just that with people like the above quoted threadster, if we minimalize the words, "theft" instead of "robbery", euphamize it up a bit. It makes the whole thing sound so much sweeter and nicer. Hell, by the time this person is finished telling the story, the people that grabbed the money bag only took it to deposit it the bank for the girl scouts.
Call a spade a spade. Whether you steal a penny, or a million $$. Its robbery.
Dictionary Definition: ROBBERY
1. The act or practice of robbing; theft.
Note: Robbery, in a strict sense, differs from theft, as it is effected by force or intimidation, whereas theft is committed by stealth, or privately.
I would imagine 2 things, an adult male, coming up on some 9yr old girls out in public, aint too private, and since people saw it, got down the plates and description, definitely wasn't very stealthy. So, he got the money by force, and intimidation, ergo, Robbery. Big nasty word for stealing from girl scouts, next he'll probably knock off the collection plate at church.

To add to this insult, this is the Youngest group of the Girl Scouts, The Brownies!

If I were a 9 year old girl and I just had some scary guy steal money in front of me I think then I would completely freak out if my scout leader then pulled out a gun and shot the guy in front of me!!! ....
