Basically, I am tired of the long winters adn this year been sick alot as I found out I have some allergies. Mold is one of them so moisture when it rains here seemed to make it worse. Mostly only in springtime because the combination of cedar.

So my wife and I have decided between San Antonio or El Paso. Yes, El Paso is arid high desert and San Antonio is more humid. But less the Houston where my wifes sister now lives. But the humidy is less then where I currently live on the seacoast area.

I am self employed tv repair shop and have zip retirement so affordable housing is a priority. We own our small house and can sell for small profit. My concerne is in El Paso I may have more problems communicating with the majority because I speak no Spanish. My wife is asian Phillipino and can relate to the spanish dialect.

Other than the weather between the two cities what is anyones opinions? I plan on either starting up another electronic repair shop or a small fitness personal training studio.

Since my wifes sister recently moved to Houston is only 200miles away and she has not seen her in 5 years. So thats a positive. We plan on visiting both El Paso & San Antonio in November. Plan on looking for new homes and rental retail space for my buisness. Looking at no more than $145k which may not buy too much in San Antonio but does around El Paso.

Actually, you'd be VERY surprised what $145,000 would get you in San Antonio.

Would you think San Antonio would be a better choice instead of El Paso? Are the people considered more healthy and would pay to have personal training? Alot of good certified trainers get $50+ per hour session (less with 10) so would San Antonio be a wiser choice?

In my opinion, yes.

Not to bash El Paso but the fact is, its a poor metro area. Not to mention its metro population is 750,000 compared to San Antonio at about 2 million.

El Paso is too dang close to Juarez, a nightmare border town. Warring drug dealers, the "Juarez Killings," etc., etc., etc. Forget it, move to San Antonio. A no-brainer.

If you want to make a living off of owning a small business then I would definitely go with San Antonio. There's more money here and you'll have no problem getting a nice houseing the $145k range. I drove past El Paso on our way out here. We never left the car because it just looked nasty. I'm used to border towns, grew up in San Diego and it's 45 minutes away from Tijauna and El Paso looked way nastier. What we drove through in El Paso looked like inner city Tijuana, I've never seen anything like it in the US. Full on shanty town. I'm sure there are nice parts of El Paso too but there's way more money here in San Antonio so if you're looking to start a business then San Antonio, hands down.

I lived in El Paso for about a year and half and just recently moved to San Antonio. El Paso has its nice areas and it has it's inner city ugly looking areas. Living in El Paso to me was like living in an upscale part of Mexico. I am Latino (Puerto Rican), am fluent in Spanish and proud to be boricua. However I could never get used to being immersed in an almost completely Mexican culture and I am Puerto Rican. So I can't imagine how an Anglo would feel. Don't get me wrong, Mexicans (at least the ones I dealt with) are wonderful people, gentle, humble, hard-working and family oriented. I learned a lot about the, as a culture however I grew up in a very diverse city in Pennsylvania, where I was used to seeing and interacting with Puerto Ricans, Anglos, African Americans, Asians, Indians and more. That is not the main reason for us moving from El Paso. For us it was about finding good paying jobs in my field and my wife’s fields.

El Paso is a very boring city. The only things to do there are shopping and eating out. There is a wannabe run-down water park there that sucks, and a cheesy little amusement park that looks more like a cheap fair than an amusement park. Sure there are museums and galleries but no art scene-except for a few artists that spend their days painting the Franklin Mountains. I am not much into music or concerts so I can't say much for that part of it. I will say that they have had some big name people there doing comedy and even some good kids events (123 Sesame) but that is all. The zoo is very depressing, and run down. There is no real downtown other than tons of shops selling cheap goods for those coming in from Juarez. I had family visit from out of town and each time I felt so embarrassed when they would ask what is there to do around here.

In regards to housing you can certainly find some nice housing in that price range but not very big and not in the good parts of town (good parts being the Upper Valley or West Side). You could go out to Anthony, TX about 15-20 minutes from El Paso and get a 1500 sf house for about 139,000. As far as setting up a repair shop I can't really say if that would work in El Paso or not.

El Paso is a very dry city, it has its rain in August and September and then the rest of the year it is very dry. Hardly anyone has grass due to how much it costs to maintain it.

When I compared El Paso to San Antonio, in deciding to move here, San Antonio won hands down for work possibilities, things to do, and home prices.

IMHO: If you want a more diverse city with more to do, better work opportunities, and more home for your money than I would say choose San Antonio. However if you want a quiet place to live with virtually nothing to do, hot dry weather, Mexican food, Mexican people and Mexican music at every turn then El Paso is for you.
