Drivers handbook http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/DLhandbook.pdf (broken link) 4-3 Situation 8 and 5-5.

9-2
ENTERING THE FREEWAY
1. You must yield the right-of-way to vehicles already on the freeway.
2. Enter the speed change lane, stay to the right, signal left, and when the
way is clear increase your speed so you can merge with the flow of traffic.

I never understood why people force the "zipper" down here. That clogs up the entire highway as opposed to clogging up the on-ramp. People getting on the highway yield to people on the highway, even if they have to stop because there's no room. It's not your right to get onto the highway.

Most Texans consider the Drivers Handbook more like "guidelines."

Decades of education will not help some of these drivers though...

personally i like yield signs. would you rather that you MUST come to a complete stop when there is no other cars around at an intersection? all the problems with the yield signs at the off ramps is caused by people who don’t understand merging. i also think the core of that is the idea of right of way. many people are all about themselves, and the thought that they must adjust their actions as to not affect another driver is something they cant get their head around.

When driving onto the speed change lane from a road onto the highway, most people use their rear-view mirrors to make the judgment whether he should accelerate onto the highway or slow down/wait until traffic passes. The problem, I think, is that these rear-view mirrors show a depth perception that is inaccurate. I think it's better to pretend you're the Red Baron and keep your head on a swivel looking back for traffic rather than entrusting the rear-view mirror for your most risky driving maneuver of the day. You've read the text before: Objects in mirror are closer than they appear! And the way these guys drive 80mph+ on the highway....better hope you made the best judgment before swerving onto the highway*

*Or RD2007 will come hunt you down.
