Never missed the bandilleros and their incredible agility and nerve on KWEX T.V.

Gone But Not Forgotten....well at least for me...because I recall..

1955~San Antonio

I lived @ the Victoria courts which were located towards east on Durango Blvd.
where the Texan Cultural Institute is presently situated but across on the other
side of the street. Where the present freeway is...there use to be an old fashion
ice cream parlor. With the jukebox, wooden phone booths & real malted milk shakes !

Before KWEX...this station was KCOR & the staff would place chairs
outside the front entrance. Also a black & white television was set in
the front doors for the public to watch for free.
Back in the mid 50s...we didn't own a tv set. So this was our entertainment.
In the evenings they would show a live telecast of what the studio was
presenting inside. One show I recall was "El Vampiro".
Years later this station became Kwex part of the SIN or Spanish
International Network by Mr. Emilio Nicholas. Later to Univision.
I worked in production & switched to the news department as a news
photog.
I worked there for 28 years.
But my best times was the 2 months I ran errands for Mr. Nicholas.
There were many tasks & I enjoyed driving around San Antonio by myself.
He loved to order food from Shilo's Deli on Commerce. It was good
tasting food & what he ate ..he made sure I could order what I wanted.
On Christmas time he gave me a huge bonus & told me it was just
between the two of us. He probably doesn't remember me now...but I
will always. They don't make them like him anymore, he was so creative
with tremendous energy for things. I was fortunate to have known him
along with others who I consider true pioneers of television.
Ranchodrive,

Very interesting!!
Where is the Univision station building located now?

Univision moved to the Northwest Side off De Zavala Rd.

The old station was torn down to make way for an apartment
complex.

I am curious would they record the shows they used to show on Tv back in the 70's and 80's?

I started working there in early 80s. And yes they did record
the news, sports & daily variety shows.

I was in production dept. when "Don Chema" with Mr. Oscar
Zamora would record his show in the studios for example.
But there were many shows that came from Mexico .

In the back of the studios there was a stockroom with
numerous shelves. All the "tapings" were cataloged & kept
here.
But over the years the format or the kind of "tapes" being used to
air these "shows" was changing.

Just like at home ...remember the beta tape format?
Then there was the VHS tapes & so on.

Well something similar was also happening in the stations.

So the machines to edit or view these recordings were no
longer required & were replaced by the newer machines &
format.
So in essence the old machines became obsolete.

My last years at KWEX... the station went to computer chips ....

No more tapes or cartridges...

I still have some tapes of SA from the 80s at home...
but I don't have the machines to view them.

I'm guessing that a production company today might be able to
"convert" these recordings from the past for a price.

I just don't know if the station still has them or not.

Could it be possible to upload them in YouTube maybe?
Would be interesting to watch.

" Seguro-que-hell-yes "...that's latin for "yes by all means"...

Seriously...I'm sure it can be done...

I enjoy watching "The Honeymooners" on YouTube . There are many
other shows I view now that I missed when they were originally aired
on television. I enjoy the films of Cantinflas & Pedro Infante which
bring back memories of my childhood.

But to find the recordings & transfer them to computer so that they
can be uploaded to YouTube...now that is something I haven't done.
I'm sure others here would know more.

Ranchodrive, This guy that runs the website, The Museum of Classic Chicago Television, might be able to help ya with options for transferring them. He has a bunch of old TV bumpers and commercials up on Youtube too.

Thanks for the information, I have been looking for the old southwest wrestling shows in Spanish. Used to look forward to that every Saturday afternoon in the early 80's.
