....10-12 years ago SIKK told me some history on his family's property..

of course now I don't remember the name of the Teamster in the story.

property in question is at the SouthWest intersection of N Flores and Warren St
with Sam Houston Alley at the West property line.

he was telling me about the house that once stood at the NorthWest corner of the (large) property
(SouthEast corner of Warren St and Sam Houston Alley)

very old two story home, demolished in about 1970
story he told, the Teamster lived in the house (maybe built it) way back when
this Teamster ran a wagon train to El Paso etc etc etc lots of details I do not recall

he got the story from a Historian who had stopped in asking some questions
my friend died 4-5 years ago, so I can't ask again
.
.....CLICK THIS LINK to see the vacant parking lot where the house once stood
.
.
(we all know the Old Spanish Trail, Florida to California, ran through San Antonio
North up N Flores then up Fred Rd thru Balcones Hts
north up into Texas then west to California)
.
.
I just called his brother to ask if he remembered the Teamsters name.
he doesn't
I want the name so I can research deeper into this

these two brothers and the rest of the family are lifelong friends of mine
and have quite a colorful and checkered history theirownselves.

anyway on the phone today I did hear some more history about the old house,
and, the other buildings on the property etc etc

he told me that one day when he was a young teenager,
he saw Henry B. Gonzalez standing out in the street, having a look around,
so he asked what was up, and HBG said he was checking out his old neighborhood,
and that he had grown up in the house.
.
west of the house mentioned above, at 432 Warren is a warehouse that stands to this day

......CLICK THIS LINK to see the warehouse I speak of.

the warehouse previously housed WinterGreen Root Beer,
then later a company called Vanilla Extract Products
.
at the SouthEast corner of this property, 1132-1134 N Flores was a Piggly Wiggly Grocery store way back when
(maybe the first in San Antonio)
later this location was Yale Printing
.
.
Redondo Tile was at 1138 N Flores at the NorthWest corner of this property
.
......CLICK THIS LINK to see Redondo Tile location
.
supposed to have been three generations of tile men worked from this location,
and they have some well known artwork here in SATx.
I don't know the family's name, or where this artwork is.

this part of the property was also, at a point in time way earlier,
the old oxcart Teamsters HeadQuarters,
and the stables were directly across Flores to the west.
.
the family bought the property in about 1966-7
after the roof burned out of the block building
.
.
anything to add???
.
.
mud
.

South of Five Points I remember Croft's Trailer rentals and Polunsky's SeaFood...forgot the plumbing outfit. Then a dairy supply place ..further south I don't recall. Haven't been up there in a while.

Is there anyone here that knows when they tore down the Woodmen of the World hospital that sat on the hill off Brees and N New Braunfels? It was a fairly large facility. I've seen a postcard of it and it was a wonderful building. I have seen articles where it was in use well into the 60's...possibly 1970? It was in the approximate location of the Tanglewood apartments. Tanglewood had to have been build around 1970 or before....guess I need to go do some research at the library.

It would have been torn down circa 1960. The hospital building itself was indeed located where the Tanglewood Apartments now sit. The apartment complex was completed in 1963. The original chapel that is now part of the Sunset Ridge Church of Christ was originally built as a non-denominational place of worship for hospital patrons. The Meadowwood subdivision (development started around 1960), RAM gas station, and the offices and retail shops along N. New Braunfels are all built on what was part of the hospital's front lawn.

Thanks Ged! I wish someone would dig up some photos! If they decide to condemn a building or house like this, they should be required to photograph and document the entire structure for historical purposes. Makes me crazy!

How about Mars Plumbing? When I was in real estate back in the 1970's, they were a popular place.
