Maybe we should start talking about cars gone but not forgotten in San Antonio. I had a 1979 Oldsmobile that I drove for years. It was a 350 with a Quadrajet and a Hydramatic tranny. Same as a Corvette. My first car was a 1956 Oldsmobile that my dad bought new from "Pop Gunn". I was very young but I still remember it. The ashtrays had little lights in them. Dad didn't smoke and had to ask what they were. I drove that car when I went to Highschool--after my older sister got through with it! It quit running right in front of Lackland Airforce Base and it would only go backwards. I backed it off the road and found a telephone. I called a friend who picked me up in his VW and I never saw the old "Catfish" again.

Here is some stuff I remember. My sister used one foot for the gas pedal and one foot for the brake pedal. Everybody told her that was wrong wrong wrong!. What will happen if you get a car with a standard transmission? She didn't know what they were talking about? Aren't they all "Standard" transmissions?

Just discovered this forum currently living in houston, really great info. I was born and raised in SA and grew up on the northside. Are there any 09'ers out there who went to AHHS in the 80's? Who remembers cementville and listening to joe anthony on 99.5 kiss??

Seems like it was a two tone grey over silver coupe. He put in a 283/four barrel with Hurst 4 speed and 411 rear-end but could never afford the good tires needed to win money. He qualified more than a couple times but I don't think he ever trophied as there were some very serious street rods at that track every Sunday. Then his number came up in the draft and that was that.

What's weird is that I bought a 62 Nova around 1968-69 that I installed a brand new out of the crate 327-365hp Corvette motor with 202 heads, edelbrock alum manifold, holley 3 barrel(huge sucker) and fenderwell headers. I did it by trial and error. It was a beast! If I'd known about them having a nova, I could have possibly gotten some help.

RGJ, you still have that 62 Nova.... hopefully, but not likely.

I also picked up a 327/365 crate motor around that same time period.
may have been in 67.

it went into a 35 Ford. wish I still had it. first hotrod I built.

If I remember correctly
that hipo crate motor set me back something in the neighborhood of 250-300 bux

I think I paid around 900-1000 for the short block and heads from Mission Chevrolet. I wish I still had that Nova. Sold it way too cheap! I know my 17 yr old would love to have it about now!

Paula's Cafe in Leon Valley...the T&L Ice House just up the street from them. Paula and her husband Raymond were a real nice couple - he lost a leg in WWII, but didn't let it slow him down. 6 burgers for a buck, and some of the best salsa I ever ate!
