The archaeology lab at UT did the work when Canyon Dam(Corps of Engineers) was built in 1964-'65 as it too covered lots of camps, ancient and otherwise, burial grounds, villages, homes, schools, etc. and reports were filed accordingly.

1964-'65.. I always thought it was earlier than that, so I looked it up..
Construction of the Dam began in 1958, completed in 64, full in 68.

Olllddd guy I know told me some stories 8-10 years ago,
he lived by the River before the Dam was built.
His family worked at some Ranch, I don't remember all the details.

I guess he was born in the 30s, and the main part of his story that I remember,
there was a big flood, when he was very young,
and he and his father spent a day or two high up in a tree,
until they could be rescued.
I need to give him a call and get refreshed on that info.

Nowadaze, you might lay on the floor waiting for attention for a day or two,
from what I hear.

I'm looking through the family archives now for a picture of my grandFather.
It was in the CastroVille (or was it Hondo) newspaper maybe in the 70s...
he's holding about a six foot Rattler by the tail.
killed it at his hunting lease in Hondo.

Haven't found it yet, but I am finding a lot of other interesting memorabilia....

but stories of hugemungous catfish are common around many Texas dam sites.

And speakin' of cotton mouths, it was at that fish camp we can't recall the name of
where I first heard tell of moccasins dropping from the low cypress branches into boats up close to the bank.
Man, that still gives me the willies to think about even now.

As for peddling a bike around the old Lake or up the road from Rio Medina,
not now nor never Mud ol' buddy so you earned that merit badge and then some.
In fact, it if were me, I would still be wearing it and telling people why.

As for shear pins, at about age 11 or 12 one summer I busted ours on a submerged rock
in a cove at Medina while my uncle Bill checked his trot line about five one morning.
It was pitch dark and cold, even in July at 5 am it's cold on the lake,
but he got the spare put in while I kept the lantern on it.

I guess that extra shear pins and needle nose pliers are still a must for any motor boat.

and the ones about the mocsins dropping into the boats.

I wish I still had that Cycling badge, I like your idea of wearing it and telling why.
I asked my brother today if he remembered the name of the Fish camp,
he doesn't,
he said all he remembered was camping in the boat,
and bloodbaiting the trotlines.

Yeah, the spare shear pin lesson carried on later,
I always carried a spare master link for the HD chain.

Speaking of Sickles, I spotted this one today at my brothers place,
and he gave it to me.. An old BSA.


It was placed here 30 some odd years ago.....

I'm gonna go over with a chainSaw soon and rescue it.
