Hey all!
Me and my husband currently live in San Antonio (near The Rim) and we are looking to purchase our first house. We are fairly new to SA and don't really know what areas are good and bad (aside from the south side). We are looking at Schertz, Selma and Live Oak so far. Any info on those areas would be great!

Thanks!

What's wrong with the Northwest side of San Antonio where you're at now? Of course, the Northeast side of SA is nice too (Schertz and Selma). You might look at Bulverde too.

Nothing is wrong with the area we are in now, we just would like to get out of the city if possible. I know city taxes are insane. We also have two small children, not school age yet, so school districts are important to us as well.

I would look in the North Central area....Bulverde is nice...traffic is gonna be hell until they fix 281.
I personally would stay on the Northwest side. I live on Potranco outside 1604 and love the area...don't know about the schools though.

Actually, the city taxes aren't bad. On a roughly $3,000 tax bill, only about $550 goes to city taxes. Other taxes include: county taxes, alamo community college, sa river authority, university health system, and the big one: school taxes. All those taxes have to be paid even outside the city of San Antonio. If you move to Selma, you'll be paying city taxes to Selma. And if you go outside Selma enough to be out of the city limits, you may have a tax for emergency services.

My advice is: don't limit your options; staying in the big city doesn't cost that much more. I see properties out in the county with overall tax rates as high as San Antonio's

Good advice. I hear people all the time that want to avoid city taxes, but reality is that the county and school taxes usually make up the bulk of the bill. Just depending on how often you come into town, you could blow past that in gas money alone.

An important thing to consider is where will you be commuting to? That is always the big one.
