Now I see that this is an old message! (It is early and my brain isn't awake). What was the end of the story? Hopefully it is somewhere in the posts--I'll now read them all!

I know it's too late now but once he started yelling, I would have screamed Fire! In self defense classes this is more effective than just screaming. After yelling fire, I would have gone inside the store to tell the clerk even though most likely they will have a puzzled look on their face but being inside will help because there is cameras and other customers. The clerk will call the police and there it goes for the next time we hope doesn't happen again.

I would check with the gas station. Maybe they have video that would prove how he approached you and your reasonable perception of danger. Although, I doubt they still have it, and I doubt they'll release it to you. I'm sure though, that they would have been happy to play it for a police officer investigating a claim. You should have waited. Chances are, they didn't call the police. If the guy was high, the wouldn't want to involve cops.
