Just a quick question as I will be visiting this weekend -- what is the "best" tex-mex restaurant in SA??? Looking for somewhere really good to try...

Where will you be, and what's your tolerance for driving to not-so-pretty parts of town?

The old standby downtown is Mi Tierra, but I haven't been there in years, so I don't know if it's still any good or not. There's also Rosario's and Tito's in Southtown.

I'd avoid the places on the Riverwalk, with the exception of Boudros, which is more Southwestern fusion than Tex Mex anyways.

My favorite place is Taco Taco Cafe on Hildebrand and McCullough. They were our little neighborhood secret til Alton Brown, Food Network, and Gourmet Magazine all showed up literally a few months apart, so expect lines.

There are lots. You'll get a lot of options in this thread.

I really like Pico de Gallo.

I went to Mi Tierra a few months ago and it is just as I remembered it from thirty years ago. Hugely popular with mediocre, but satisfying, food. It is consistent and not bad at all. There are many places that are better, but are hard to find and not always is such nice surroundings.

It is hard to find a bad tex-mex spot in SA. My favorites are long out of date, but included Don Pedros on SW Military, Cristan Tacos on San Pedro, Casa Dos Pedros on SW Military, El Rey on Hildebrand, Henry's Puffy Tacos on Woodlawn. I used to really enjoy El Azteca on Evers Rd, but they closed years ago....I noticed that there are a couple of El Aztecas listed in phone book recently but have not been to either of them to see if they are at all similar to my old fav.

I also like Paloma Blanca in Alamo Heights.

Oh, just a note... Henry's Puffy Tacos moved to Bandera Road just outside 410, but its replacement (can't remember the name) was good when I ate there a couple of months ago.
