What is the typical protocol for garage sales around here? I almost never see any during the week, only on Saturdays. Is this the only day they're allowed??

I also know we have to get a permit also (that is a bunch of GRR from me on that!)....

what else do I need to know before throwing a garage sale??

There's a lot of info at the link below:

Enforcement Codes.

IIRC, there is more info printed on the garage sale permit, like hours that sales are permitted. The law says they can't start before 9 AM. I don't remember the end time... 5 PM maybe?

IMO, the permit law is a good thing. I've known places where people had a year-round garage sale. You don't want one of those in your neighborhood, and the permit is a good tool for limiting those.

By my office people have stuff out from Thursday to Monday. It makes me laugh so hard. And nothing happens! If that happened by my house, though, it would be frowned upon. Granted, I work on the westside and live on the NW side of town.

The link Bowie provided is super, but a lot of people don't follow the rules. I had someone say they never bought permits because "they had to make money somehow." I was like 'Umm oaky?"

Are you inside city limits? We are 3 streets out of city limits (for now...) and from what I understand the county does not require permits.

If you're in the City, yes you need a permit. Call 311 and they will let you know where you can get one and what the guidelines are. They aren't restricted to Saturday, its just the most popular day. Also, see if your HOA (if you have one) has any restrictions or if they have a community wide one (they'll usually put it in the paper and get better turnout).

I can't get anyone from my HOA to return a phone call or email. But I've seen people have them in my neighborhood...

I'm near Castle Hills, so I'm still in the city limits.

Thanks for all the info! Now off to price my stuff and get ready to make some (very little probably) money!
