Why does oranges and tangerines taste so bad now. I remember wehn I was a kid I just love them. Is there a local produce place in SA that I can relive my childhood through the taste of juicy oranges and tangerines. Sames goes for peaches and plums

They pick them before they are ripe. In a hurry to put them on the shelves.

NRDC: Eat Local

I was thinking they weren't in season and were likely imports, but checked out my favorite website above and they are in season now. Like Buffyfan said, they pick them too early. And they probably pump them full of pesticides and other artificial stuff to make them look pretty for market.
Stick with local groves and orchards, or buy organic from producers that aren't too far from here.

Locally grown fruits and vegetables typically are picked when ripe and brought to market within days, instead of 3-6 weeks for many commercially grown foods. Not only are they fresher, but because they were left to ripen longer and transported more quickly, they retain a much higher percentage of their nutritional content. If you want fruit and veggies that actually taste like fruit and veggies, try these resources:

try Clementine Mandarins. I buy a 5 lb box of them about every week and they're very good. Just make sure you take the bag out and check for moldy ones on the bottom. Also make sure they are pretty dense and slightly heavy. The ones that are lighter than others are usually dried out and don't taste good at all. They're very sweet, seedless, and very easy to peel. I usually get the Cuties brand, but picked up a different brand at the Lackland Commissary yesterday and they're some of the best yet. I can't remember the brand name, though. They are usually from California, but I have had some from Morocco before and they were also very good.
