I worked with the Jaycees at LaSemana in the 70's & 80's when it was at Hemisfair Plaza. It was a great event with separate rock and country music areas. It ran later than NIOSA so we always had a large crowd join us when NIOSA closed. OH the memories!

I went to LeSemana a few times in the 90's when I was a little punk, got hit upside the head with flying plastic beer cups, everyone was throwing them around, tons of fun, hah. The national acts were cool, Fiesta needs to bring something like it back.

Default La Semana

I was involved in various areas with La Semana Alegre from 1989 until the end and attended most of the committee meetings. There are a lot things that have been written about the event that are not true whatsoever and very few had access to most of the correct info. Yes La Semana was the whipping boy of Fiesta because the press didn't want to tangle with the money and political people behind NIOSA or the Archbishop and his St. Mary's University, but in the history of the event (1969-1995) there was only ONE reported stabbing and it happened outside the gates and involved people that operated the rides at the carnival. The MAIN reason that the event shut down was not because of noise (sanctioned Fiesta events such as La Semana Alegre was - were exempt from noise ordinances) and not due to violence as it was probably the safest event at Fiesta (metal detectors were used and a large security staff in place - most arrests were for drunk & disorderly which happened at all events) but the Jaycees and the event were basically being blackmailed/extorted by a few special interest groups on the East side. Basically there was an amount of money being demanded each year and the Jaycees and the organizers of the event refused to pay them. No one has ever released this info that I am aware of but that true story should be told in more detail by someone that was at the top of the event heirarchy (not to mention any names and I doubt if they ever read any of this). I have heard that some basic website for La Semana Alegre will be put together with some of the basic info but I would love to hear details of all the stories (the blackmail, the Henry Cisneros controversy, how some of those bands were reunited (UFO, Budgie, Trapeze, Spinal Tap, etc) and some of the many stories that had tosbe a part of an event with so many bands, so many years and so many nights. I would love it if they had a place for people to ask questions and they would sctually be answered.

Long Live La Semana Alegre
