Eek. I really didn't mean this thread to be a 'How Horrible is Fiesta' kind of thing...

Just because I don't enjoy all of the traffic and drunkards ambling around doesn't mean I don't think it should exist. Fiesta brings a smile to many, money to the city and is major tradition: I support that big time. Most of my issue in the original post came from the idiot motorcycle cops who couldn't figure out how to properly escort a car if their life depended on it. For Fiesta 'royalty' to get that kind of traffic treatment when the city is already at Defcon-5 is ridiculous. Just a waste IMO.

And please, don't get me started on the SAPD traffic cops who need major retesting in directing traffic properly. The intersection of S. Alamo/Commerce was a disgrace.

Fiesta is peachy keen, but make no mistake, I still despise First Friday

I actually like it because it kept a lot of people away from my suburbia ghetto.

and as far as not liking something without actually going, that's easy. Some people don't like crowds, greasy food, drunks, and stinky sweaty people and don't have to actually see it in real life to know that.

To each his own. Some people are just more adventurous than others and willing to color outside the lines. I had always said I didn't like the opera, but had never been. I was invited, decided to experience it firsthand, and went with an open mind. I can now speak from experience and say I don't like opera. See how that works? That's all I'm saying.

It's also possible to LIKE Fiesta time without actually attending events! Fiesta clothes and parties in the workplace, parades and coverage on tv, and the general festive atmosphere over the city, plus a day off for battle of Flowers? What's not to love!

I do try to do at least one event every year, though. One thing many don't get about Fiesta is that it is not just one event, there is something somewhere for people of any age, from "high class to low brow", and things are not just downtown.

We had a blast!
Went to Fireworks at Ft. Sam-free and we took our own beer, wine, cheese, crackers, sandwiches, cookies, etc.

Went to NIOSA Thursday (usually go on Mon or Tues) It was dead the first couple hours. Left about 930 when they were giving out tickets to minors drinking! That was interesting! Spent almost 100 bucks on tickets, bus fare, food and about 4 beers ea.

Went to King William from 1130 to 230-5 bucks to get in, think we spent 20. also ate a chalupa at Titos and watched the crowd from an outdoor table. Great to see the Krayolas-used to see em in the mid 70s. Oh and watched Flambeau on TV.

I like this post and yes you are correct something for everyone from high class (Taste of the Northside - no riff raff there) to low brow (the carnival for sure).

EVERY YEAR I get the same phone call from my mother: "You're not going to that carnival, right? People get stabbed there, you know." EVERY YEAR. Even this year, where the closest I got to Fiesta was parking next to one of the many fragrant dumpsters conveniently scattered across St. Mary's the Monday after Oyster Bake.
