HEB....funny, because when Krogers and Albertsons came into this market, they planned on "putting them out of business". I knew a lot of their upper management, and they came very close, but HEB was smart and looked at what was needed in order to compete - and then rewrote the book. Say what you want, but they've excelled in a marketplace where major corporate giants "always" win. Don't agree with everything they do/have done, but as a business model, they're certainly hard to beat.
Go around to where the other industry giants have managed to put the locals out of business - HEB looks like a WHOLE lot better option. Since they're headquartered here, much of the money stays here, and they're quite generous to local charities. May not always shop there, but I always appreciate their presence.

I don't think it's a matter of being brainwashed. It's really a matter of competing. If Trader Joe's were to come to town, you can bet there would be a brand new store from HEB, maybe a "Trader Charlie's"(as in Charles Butt), across the street with lower prices

Exactly. San Antonio is ALL about lower prices. I have no use for HEB. But pretty soon, I'm sure that will be all that's left.

With all due respect, that's all the buying public cares about any more, by and large. Look at all the posts on this very forum - the primary concern is cost, not quality. I understand being "value conscious" - but so many will look for that last penny, and overlook the dollar.

I won't buy durable goods from any discount house for that very reason - a local store is much more likely to work harder to meet my reasonable expectations than any of the discounters.

So where do you shop then?

Super Target, mostly. I also go to Whole Foods for some items....Walmart for others. I don't care for the Hill Country Fare brand (I know, I'm like the ONLY one in town! LOL) and the HEB by my house is just an awful experience. Every once in a while....just because I don't want to fight traffic at Alamo Ranch, I will go into the HEB at Culebra and 1604. They do have fresher beef than ST and definitely fresher than WM.

As much as I like HEB, I will not, will not, buy their Hill Country Fare brand stuff. Reminds of the el cheapo stuff warehouse groceries used to sell.

Well, considering that this thread was started almost four years ago; shouldn't the title be changed to 'Trader Joe's is NOT coming to San Antonio!'??

Heck, there hasn't been any progress made on Tacara either! GoogleMaps shows a whole lot of nothing at the location where it's suppose to be. We drove by that area last weekend as well, and I don't recall seeing anything either!

I chuckle with all these folks that excitedly claim Trader Joe's is coming to San Antonio, when the closest one is still over 700 miles away in Sante Fe, NM!

Cheers! M2

What's left of Tacara will be bought out by Centex/Pulte or D R Horton But, that's for another thread!

I don't buy Hill Country Fare, but I do buy the HEB brand. I try to avoid Great Value and Equate.
