I know they're not the best paying...but it's something. Better than losing jobs.

Medtronic Diabetes, a unit of Minneapolis-based Medtronic Inc., will bring 1,400 sales and support jobs to San Antonio and will start hiring this summer, the San Antonio Express-News has learned.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said the number of jobs, the expansion of the city’s medical industry and possible future research and manufacturing opportunities combine to make Medtronic’s site selection the biggest economic boost for San Antonio since Toyota Motor Co. announced in 2003 it would build an assembly plant in San Antonio.

Gov. Rick Perry will announce the deal formally at 3:15 p.m. Monday at the Overlook at the Rim building in The Rim shopping center, where the company will set up operations.

They are moving into the new office building at The Rim. How many new jobs can we create outside 1604 this year?

Medtronic jobs will require college degrees, so I doubt they'll be extremely low-paying.

""Wolff said the Medtronic jobs will pay an average of $33,000 to $34,000 a year and will hire mainly college graduates.""

That average seems pretty low to me. Of course, there will be some jobs above and some below....but the average is dismal.

They're probably planning to mine the market for entry-level folks. SA turns out more new college grads every year. $33K isn't bad for a first job for a single kid, but it would be painful as a mid-career option to support a family.

Makes the $45,000 or so per year paid to entry-level public school teachers in the San Antonio area (if you can find an opening) sound pretty good.

In reality, $33,000 - $34,000 a year for entry-level jobs requiring a college degree is probably about on par for San Antonio area private-sector employers.

""The proximity to the UT Health Science Center’s diabetes program and San Antonio’s Diabetes & Glandular Disease Clinic also were factors""

^^^Was most likely the bigger reason.

As per city data:

42,123 Average salary (Kansas City) the other finalist
41,593 Average salary (San Antonio)

Not much difference. Both low.
