If you like your carne guisada that is watered down then go here, I was disappointed the last time i ate here. The cg was like a soup with little meat, i complained and they said "its like that sometimes". I was not impressed at all.

Just ate at El Chaparral for lunch. Great enchiladas verdes and the top shelf margarita was excellent!!! I recommend the Helotes location-El Chaparral!!!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of the San Antonio area. Stop telling people about it!
There wasn't a wait, but there will be if the masses find out about it. It's a little off the beaten trail, and relatively unknown. I love the patio in the cooler months, the views are amazing!

I only eat carne guisada if my husband or one of his aunts makes it - I've had too many bad experiences in restaurants.

I like El Chaparral and agree that the enchiladas verdes rock.

dmarie, I don't think El Chaparral is unknown at all - I think it's pretty well known.

Well, I know I have lived here for years, and no one ever told me about it. I drove by on my way out to Bandera a few months ago and decided to try it. I've taken a few friends there, and none of them have ever heard of it. We all live in the 151/1604/1560 area, so we're not on the other side of town. I am a transplant, and my friends are all transplants (military) so that might be why it is in obscurity in our social group. Maybe for "lifers" it isn't unknown. I just asked 10 of my coworkers, averaging 3-5 years in San Antonio, and none of them have ever heard of it.

It is not too unknown, cuz it's always busy, but I didn't realize it was as well known as it appears to be from this thread.

DH and I don't really like the food at El Chaparral. We do like Bobby J's, however. It's very good!

I am sure it's not to everyone's liking; but considering the lines that form every weekend to get into the place, they've got to be doing something right!
