I don't think aircraft performance is an issue. The 747 only climbs to 15,000' @ .6 mach, low and slow eating much fuel. It has only a range of 1000 NM with the shuttle attached. San Antonio has handled 747s in the past . The runway length is more than sufficient.

What I remember is that the Shuttle on top of a 747 was parked on the side near a hanger. I can see why it would be flying into Kelly rather than SAT except I would have no idea why I would have been around there. It could have been a much lighter test model. The memory is somewhat vague but I am pretty sure I did see it at SAT, I am just not sure from what road it was.

It ate up as much of that 11,500 foot runway as it could get. A few of us standing around from work near the end of the runway kept on wondering when it was going to lift off.

I was surprised at how quiet it is - I thought it was an older model 747 with louder engines. It was a total contrast to the ear splitting C5 that took off next.

That fuel burn rate is 5x normal, compared to an unladen range of 5500 NM...

And it is never a matter of how much runway you've got, it's more the amount of runway you don't have that is discerning! Given the opportunity to have a runway that is almost 1000m (0.6 miles) longer, I think it is understandable why they would choose Kelly!
