On your question about the "machismo" attitude, I think I know what you were referring to. When I lived in Phx, there would often be gatherings of older adult, yes immigrant Mexican, men sitting around. If a young women walked by they would frequently make remarks, whistle, or just in general stare in a way that would make me uncomfortable. I have not experienced that in SA (but then again, I'm no longer "young" ). The attitude of men out here seems much more laid back, not so much "machismo".

And yes, living out here is laid back and casual. Lots of restaurants have outdoor seating, and especially along the RiverWalk you'll see mid-day margarita sipping.

Musis scene for indie/rock is probably a little better in Austin, but there was a mini SXSW here this year, and I think that genre is gaining popularity.

We need good teachers!
The "machismo" Jules07 is referring too is exactly how I would describe it with the same experiences when I was younger and with out children. I was concerned about moving to SA for the same reason, but so far I have only experienced a minimal amount of "machismo" as described. (example: a few uncomfortable "looks" at the HEB on Marbach and 410 ) Overall I would say the culture here is hardworking and family oriented, while they might not be the most sophisticated people they are nice and relaxed. I couldn't say I have noticed much of a music scene, especially rock/indie, but you won't be far from Austin and there is definately a wide variety of music going on up there. Cute boys with tatoos...where are you coming from? Considering your taste in music I would have to guess that your type of guy is probably found in the northwest or north central part of town. Hope this helps, good luck!

Cute boys with tattoos in SA thru my experiences have generally meant they were homosexuals or bi-sexuals.

Yes, those sorts of boys would generally be on the north central area.

OK...now THAT was funny!

Re: the sexual orientation of tattoo-laden young men here

Michelle and I see youngish indie types quite a lot when we're out and about. While I suppose they might all be gay or bi, it seems unlikely. Having lived in San Diego's gayborhood for a while, we're generally pretty in tune to that. Besides a number of them are often with cute indie girlfriends. I've even seen some rockabilly couples!

did they wear their sexual orientation on their sleeve? heh. i'm obviously a small-town girl cause i didn't know that gay people all lived in the same area. or that they all had tattoos (in fact, none of the gay people i know have tattoos). and i certainly can't tell they're gay by looking at them.

Ma'am,

No, when they are holding hands with other men and kissing them, one would draw the assumption that they are homesexual or bisexual.
