Curious for opinions. I haven't been overly impressed with 2 local hotel spa's - Watermark and Westin LaCantera. The Watermark was superior and more keen on detail compared to the Westin, but neither seem to compare to other hotel's I've been, like the Ritz or Aman resorts. Is the best bet in SA found at the private day spa? Asking b/c this guy needs a great relaxing getaway this weekend with a friend.

Sorry - Watermark's about the best we have to offer.

In lieu of a spa day, might I suggest a tequila binge? That always relaxes me...

Did you just really ask for a local spa along the lines of an Aman property? Is it April 1st already? Come on... That's asking a WHOLE lot.

The Watermark has good treatments and they're quite diligent in finding professional and well-trained therapists.

Woodhouse Day Spa is overpriced. They've got to pay for that tacky decor job somehow...

I actually have found some good massage therapists at Spa D'Sante. You can't beat their $29/hr massages. Not much in terms of decor and surrounding when you're there, but for the price, it's the cat's pajamas.

Overall, it's rare I find hotel spas to be all that great. Only in Las Vegas have I really been bowled over by the choice of treatments, design and overall service level (I'm in love with Wynn's new Encore Spa).

It's not downtown, but I like the spa at the Hyatt Hill Country. I've always had good treatments with good therapists, the surroundings are low key, and they have a really pretty shaded outdoor adults only pool.

I am excited to hear that you like the Encore's spa, BN, as the Wynn spa is my absolute favorite.

I've tried the Wynn and enjoyed it, but Vegas is Vegas -enough said. I guess if I want the serenity of something like an Aman experience, I must make the hike. To this day there is nothing like any of my 4 Aman experiences, something everyone should experience at least once.
As for this weekend, looks like I'll be heading to the Westin LaCantera for some downtime - just dread their airport-lounge relaxation room. Here's hoping a new Four Seasons or the new marriott will up the ante on SA spas. A Marriott spa, mon dieu!...did I just say that.

I not only like Encore's new spa. I love it... Truly the most jaw-dropping design I've ever encountered in any spa. It's relaxing and serene, but designed on a scale that most other spas can't even handle. It honestly makes the Spa at Wynn look a little dinky (and that's tough to do).

I'm just sad that both spas cut ties with FRESH products in their treatments: The Sake Body Ritual at Wynn was something I dreamed about when I was away from Las Vegas... And now it's gone. Boo.

And now, back to your regularly-scheduled spa-ing,

I've had that!! The last time we went, I won some decent coin at craps, and promptly marched up to the Spa and blew it on the Sake Ritual and a few other things. I am sad they don't have it anymore.

To bring this back to San Antonio - I also use the spa at the Concord, and I've been happy with the therapists there, but the surroundings are definitely not "destination spa". They have convenience and ease of scheduling on their side, and some good staff. I was told you don't have to be a member to use the spa.

I was a member at Concord up until 2 years ago, and I'll agree that the massage therapists were good, especially this one gentleman - Randy? perhaps?
Stopped going to Concord as life got too chaotic but loved the reciprocity of outside clubs - used it to work out at the Peninsula when in NYC (great roof top bar BTW).
