My HOA is looking at waisting (in my opinion) a lot ($50K+) on landscaping our community park. It is a tiny park, no pool or anything...

This makes me wonder what other HOAs are doing and hopefully come up with some other ideas for my HOA to spend money on.

MOD NOTE: please don't move so I can got to other S.A. areas and see what is being done.

Streets (b/c the neighborhood is gated), lights, street signs, the gate itself, and landscaping / irrigation for the entry way out front. Probably whatever maintenance the perimeter wall would need, if it ever needed any. But it's made of stone so that probably doesn't happen a lot.

edit: they're pretty good about sending out a budget actually. it was a pleasant surprise when i got one at the end of last year.

$50,000 on landscaping a community park?
Who the ..... are they hiring? The people from "Desperate Landscapes"?

What would the landscaping involve?

I would definitely call/visit and make sure they get several quotes, at the very least.

I live in the Great Northwest, said to be the largest subdivision in Texas, over 25,000 residents, several neighborhoods, most homes are nice and well kept, with lots of Oak trees. I have to say I feel the the HOA doesn't care enough about appearance, the entrance signs have weeds and sometimes trash, I have to pick it up sometimes myself. They get around to it eventually but just not on a regular basis. I like my house just not happy with the HOA much, they are nice people, but, that doesn't cut it for me. I think they should spend a little money on landscaping.

Looks like a lot of people feel the same way about HOA's but is there anything that can be done? Yes, they are like dealing with the government-especially when you try to go up against them. As long as you pay- they dont care how much you complain, and as soon as you stop paying they nail you for not complying and your home can be foreclosed on. So what if anything can be done?

Run for something. Become part of 'the man' so you can change things from within.

In our subdivision we the people can not be part of the board until the neighborhood is 75% occupied- and with the economy the way it has been...the homes are being built one at a time I think! We can be on saftey commitee, or social committee- just those kind of things right now.

They can hire one (1) handyman to do all the work that needs to be done in the subdivision.
Instead of hiring companies everytime something needs to be done.

There are two sides to every HOA.. those that get things done and then those that dont do anything but keep getting their own paychecks...

My HOA promised us a swimming pool and the whole works.. guess what we have?? NOTHING... be happy they are doing landscaping.. may be a little pricey but at least you are getting something for your HOA dollars instead of lip service..
