U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently designated San Antonio International Airport as a permanent port of entry. The airport hit a new record in 2006, with over 8 million passengers. It is also adding a terminal (A-C), a parking garage, and extending the roadway system. These signs of growth are showing that SAIA, though maybe not becoming a hub, is becoming a more recognized airport. It also has 3 runways.

*ADD* Just to compare DFW had over 69 million passengers and has 5 terminals (A-E), and 7 runways.

I haven't found it to be particularly expensive to fly out of or into. And it's very easy to reach by car (or cab, in my cases). Construction around there is no fun, but it's not a bad airport considering.

I think you mean 59 million passengers.

I'm not familiar with the history of SAIA, but I'd imagine that when it was built, the surrounding area looked quite a bit different than it does now. I know my great grandparents owned the piece of land that sits in the NE corner of 281 and Nakoma, and my dad used to tell me about how the area was largely undeveloped even into the 70s.

But yeah, if they had to do it over again, I'd imagine the airport would probably be built in between SA and NB or maybe a little SE of there.

And an SA-Austin airport probably depends on the continued growth of the area. If both metros continue to attract residents and visitors at a rate that their respective airports cant keep up with (and in the case of A-B, I'm not sure how it keeps up with the demand as it is), then I'd look for there to be a strong push for a major shared airport.

I think San Antonio should do like Denver.

Buy a ton of land out somewhere where its rural and doesn't look like there will be much growth in the next 20-30 years.

Then build a fairly decent sized airport and add as much or a little as they want in the future without having to worry about buying land or ever being land locked like the current airport is.

Yeah, but 210 - right now the airport is less than 10 minutes from my house. Moving it would be reeeeeaaalllly inconvenient for me.

airport is in an excellent location close to downtown, central to the city. if the airport could become a hub for latin america then we would get more flights here.
