Are there any groups around S.A. that gather to go hunting for edible/medicinal wild plants and mushrooms? I've been reading some books on the subjects and have made some progress, but it would help me exponentially if I could meet up with a person or group that has more field experience than I do. I'd feel a lot more confident if I could confirm what I've gathered isn't a poisonous look-alike.

you might want to contact the Botanical Gardens and ask them your question. They may know of safe groups in which to affiliate. There was a topic on here some months back that sort of turned controversial because of the type of "medicinal" plant that was being discussed.

ACCD... oops, I mean Alamo Colleges... launched a new continuing education program called their Green Training Initiative (San Antonio College Continuing Education Training Network (http://www.accd.edu/SAC/ce/whats_new.html - broken link)) which has one course listed as:
Basic Herbalism (24 class hours) Explore the realm of naturopathic herbalism in which you will learn the basics of medicinal qualities of herbs. This course combines background information provided by a respected local herbalist complemented by hands-on practice working with herbs.
The teacher(s) of this course may be a good resource for identifying groups or individuals who can help you. Stephen Lewis is the coordinator of the green training courses at SAC and Anson Green is the coordinator for all ACCD schools (The Alamo Colleges).
