Just heard on KENS5 that city and county leaders are trying to convince Toyota to move production of the Tacoma pickup truck to San Antonio. Apparently it's currently built at a plant in California that is shared with GM and GM is pulling out of that plant. If the production moved here, the local plant would add 1,100 jobs.

The story's not on kens5.com yet, or I'd post a link.

Makes sense to me. Also, California is not exactly a business friendly environment now and Texas is.

California and Texas will be offering Toyota nice incentives. Although California's is probably better, you have to wonder if they can follow through as they are not as financially secure as Texas.

When faltering Tundra sales began to affect the San Antonio plant, one of the concerns expressed was that the San Antonio plant was set up for production of rear-wheel drive truck-type vehicles, rather than the front-wheel drive vehicles that make up most of Toyota's production.

But like Tundra, the Tacoma is also a rear-wheel drive truck. With its 4-cylinder or V6 engines, the more economical Tacoma should be more in demand than Tundra, at current fuel prices. I would think the San Antonio plant should be seriously considered for Tacoma production.

Oh, I would not fret the "faltering Tundra sales" too much...our daughter works for Toyota at that plant and they are working overtime getting them out for sale. They too are excited about the potential for the Tacoma as well. Toyota has business down pat, and where they are smart is they only stock a certain level of units and build on demand vs having months upon months of units sitting on lots hoping for sales.

I'm on my second Tacoma, and I can certainly attest to the fact that Toyota dealers keep a very limited inventory of these vehicles on hand. It's not like other makes where they are likely to have rows upon rows of the same model sitting on the lot.

I saw this story last night too. Even though this could potentially bring 1100 jobs to SA; the plant that is closing in Cali will be letting go around 4K people... I imagine that those 1100 jobs will be transplants from the Cali plant...

That article didn't mention the skill level of those 1100 jobs. I wish the news would be more specific about those little details. While Toyota is known for paying above average salaries and wages, it's doubtful that assembly line workers would be offered enough incentive to move. Toyota would not have to pay the wages here that they would in California because of the cost of living.

That aside....the article pointed out a lot more details that could sway the cost of moving that plant anywhere. We also have to compete with the Mexico plant that already assembles the Tacoma. That might be the biggest fly in the ointment.
