My son keeps asking me about the military planes he has been seeing flying into the SA airport. He seems to think he saw one of those new unmanned planes that are featured in one of the Air Force commercials. Anyone know anything about this?

I saw what I thought was a fighter jet flying into SA airport today. Thought it looked unusual and out of place!

Being a former flyer in the AF, that's odd.

Sorry, but you will never see an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (also known as Remotely Piloted Vehicles) at the San Antonio airport.

For one, we're too busy crashing them in Iraq and Afghanistan (48 at the last count).

Secondly, they can only fly in specific airspace. It would be too dangerous to try and pilot one through the commercial traffic at SAT...

It was probably some small homemade/experimental aircraft...

Cheers! M2

I've seen C-17s go in and out of there dropping wounded troops off to waiting ambulances taking them to BAMC (I'm assuming). Other than that I can't see military planes going in and out of there unless Randolph and Kelly were closed and they had to RON at KSAT for a night or something. I can't imagine anyone flying UAVs around there.

I fly out of SAT as a tenant. Yes, C-17s sometime overnight, but all I ever see, otherwise, are training aircraft from Randolph doing low approaches and departing.

Back in the late 80's or early 90's I was near Broadway and 410 and I swear I saw what looked like the SR-71 (the black secret plane that was being decommissioned and making a trip across the US). It appeared to be taking off from San Antonio Intern ational Airport. That was one cool aircraft.

Anyone seen the P-38 "Glacier Girl" fly out of there yet? Been dying to see her.

I saw Glacier Girl at the Randolph air show last year, and flying around SA one or two times; but never taking off or landing...

Is she kept at the SA airport? I know she is now owned by Rod Lewis of the Lewis Energy Corp here in town, having bought her for $5.5M back in 2007; but I don't know where she resides.

Yes, at SAT, along with a dozen or so other WWII birds.
