Is it true that the crime rate in SA is on the rise? Is gang activity in SA as bad as I've read about?

We moved here from the Detroit suburbs and have experienced more petty crime here in Stone Oak, if that tells you much. For example, our church preschool sends notes home all the time about purses being stolen from car in the 5 minutes it takes for moms run in to drop off kids (it happened multiple times). We also get e-mails from our HOA almost weekly about crime in the sub (car break-ins, home break-ins and vandalization) We have been advised to arm our home alarms every night, which we do. Unfortunately, that couldn't prevent a GPS & cell phone from being stolen out of our car, which was parked in our own driveway. All this comes as a big surprise to us since San Antonio seems very safe - I don't hear about a lot of violent crime.
But it does seem crime is on the rise all over because of the economy...desperate times, desperate measures. It's important to practice self-defense and to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

There is a lot of property crime--not sure I would classify it as petty, especially when it's MY stuff they're stealing. But as the previous poster mentioned, it's probably just a sign of the times.....if it's bad here, it must be hella bad in other cities that have taken a bigger hit.

In comparison to crime data at this point last year, crime has decreased significantly in four of the six categorizes that make up "property crime". Of the four that saw a decrease, two categories saw a decrease of 17 and 21 percent respectfully.

So to answer your question, no, crime is not on the rise.

This wiki page compares crime ratings for all cities and the data is from 2007 which was one of the worst years crime wise for SA in the last decade. Yet even with that said SA still has a better crime rate than most cities.

Detroit had 340 murders last year. SA had 118.

Detroit has a population of 917,000 while SA has a population of 1.35 million people. So Detroit has nearly three times more murders than SA with SA having almost 400,000 more residents.

Also, check out this website. It shows crimes that have happened in different cities.

The data shown is from July to September of this year.

Detroit Crime Map - Showing Crime in Detroit, MI - Crime Statistics - Crime Alerts - Crime Stops Here

San Antonio Crime Map - Showing Crime in San Antonio, TX - Crime Statistics - Crime Alerts - Crime Stops Here

Detroit's map is filled with shootings and robberies.

SA's map shows burglary's, thefts and assaults.
